The issue is less about how they handle her ethnicity as it is about how they handle her hatred of Roland's. Or half of her hatred of Roland's. The storyline from the series can't work as originally written of they're both dark skinned. It just can't. So they're going to have to change something about her, whether it's her ethnicity or her origin, unless they just completely leave out odetta/detta. Which wouldn't make any sense.

But even if they feel as you do, they can absolutely both be dark skinned. Just today I read an article about the state of Nina Simone accusing Zoe Saldana of not being black enough to play Nina. Let's not act like Black on Black racism or mistrust isn't a thing. It's absolutely far more important the overall story for Susannah to be black than for there to be racial tension between Roland and Susannah. That same theme can be explored in a myriad other ways. Changing Susannah would be a huge mistake. So far, the "internet reaction" to the mere rumor of a White Susannah has been met with far more outraged than the official casting of Black Roland. They're gonna do what they're gonna do. But it would be a huge mistake. And completely unnecessary. |
