Terez Paylor mock draft

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt...le8872781.html

Quote:
18 Chiefs

ILB Eric Kendricks, 6-0, 230, UCLA

The Chiefs probably wouldn’t mind scooping up any of the top three receivers — Cooper, White and Parker — or even Scherff, who figures to be a plug-and-play left guard. But all those guys are off the board here, and the widely-acknowledged first-round alternatives at those positions — Dorial Green-Beckham, Devin Funchess and Jaelen Strong at receiver and T.J. Clemmings, Ereck Flowers and Cedric Ogbuehi at offensive line — have question marks (for now).

But if the Chiefs address those positions with veterans in free agency, which might be the best option, given coach Andy Reid’s complicated playbook, that would allow general manager John Dorsey to take the best player at a position of need. Lanky Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes could be tempting, particularly with veteran Sean Smith set to hit free agency in a year, but inside linebacker is a bigger need right now, particularly if they fail to address it in free agency. Even if Derrick Johnson, 32, returns to his pre-injury form, this unit is in desperate need of young talent, and the best player on the board at this position is Kendricks, who a bonafide tackling machine who racked up a ridiculous 145 tackles in only 13 games this season.

Kendricks is not very big, so long-term durability is a concern, but his plus instincts, quickness and passion for the game would allow the two-time UCLA captain to be a plug-and-play, three-down weakside inside linebacker who can immediately help a leaky run defense. As long as Kendricks’ medical checks out, it would be a surprise if he lasts until the Chiefs’ pick in the second round.

I think it's a combination of the evolution of Sutton's defense and getting the right guy in for the task as determined by Dorsey, his scouts and the coaching staff.

Nico Johnson was a two-down type of guy and it looks like Sutton is rapidly moving away from that in terms of lining up a prototypical 34 defense. He's employing a version of the Dick Bumpas TCU 425 more than anything at this point.

Guys like Derrick Johnson are ideal for that at the NFL level - long, rangy dudes with a little size. It's why I thought that Kyle Van Noy in the 2014 Draft would have been ideal for the other inside spot.

Depending on how he tests at the Combine/Pro Day, a guy like Mississippi State's Benardrick McKinney wouldn't be a shocker as our first round pick.

Eric Kendricks isn't going to test as well as his brother did and his size doesn't do him any favors. He's not a long guy - more compact at his size, which isn't much. They'll hope to compare him to someone like Bobby Wagner, but he's not as thick as Wagner, doesn't shed blocks like Wagner and most definitely won't have the measurables that Wagner did. And Wagner went in the later part of the second round. After the Combine, I'll be surprised if Kendricks goes before the fourth round.

Am I a moron for thinking that Denzel Perryman is just as good as someone like Kendricks, the only strike against him being he's about 1-2 inches shorter?

I will mail a flaming bag of anthrax to Dorsey's house if he drafts McKinney in the 1st round

I don't think Kendricks is that tall.

Perryman is absolutely fierce. His size and play style are reminiscent of Zach Thomas.

Oh, while we are on Kendricks:

Quote:
Senior Bowl director Phil Savage created a bit of a stir during the morning weigh-in when he prefaced the names of nine players who turned down an invite by saying that teams should “dig a little deeper on” them (likely because of the way they declined an invite).

They were: Clemson defensive Corey Crawford, Kentucky defensive end Alvin “Bud” Dupree, Florida State offensive lineman Cam Erving, Florida State receiver Rashad Greene, UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley, Wake Forest cornerback Kevin Johnson, UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks, Florida State guard Josue Matias and West Virginia receiver Kevin White.

If there is a LB I am really high on it's Stephone Anthony. He's 6'2" 245 lbs and has the nastiness to shed blockers and did extremely well at the Senior Bowl.
In coverage drills he showed the speed and agility to cover RB's and TE's in the middle of the field.

He's more info on him.

I'm just not a fan of Kendricks rd 1 because I don't want to wait for a year or two to put him in the gym and get strong enough. He's gonna have to gain at least 10 lbs.

Why not just take Anthony who is perfect size, has the production and his only knock is experience in coverage (we do have a good coaching staff)?

McKinney is a very athletic guy. He's definitely a three down linebacker who has the potential to thrive in a system like Suttons. (Sorry SNR, but if he tests the way people think he will, he'll most definitely be on the Chiefs radar.)

He's played inside and outside, is very long and can move well in space.

He's not as smooth as someone like Van Noy from last year, but he's not a heavy legged run plugger like Rey Maualuga or Brandon Spikes.

You need to get that stupid ass idea out of your head that guys in good D1 programs aren't already involved in similar strength and conditioning programs that they see in the NFL

From the sound of your post I think you have no idea about a weight program on any level and likely would be stunned at what goes on even at the local high school level like Rockhurst or Blue Springs.

Now there will be some strength increases just from natural maturity as boys become men, but it has jack shit to do with going from UCLA to the Chiefs.

I'll be very interested to see at the free agent combine they want to implement how guys measurables stack up vs when they were in the combine coming out of college.

I had a lengthy discussion with a current chiefs player who my wife and I are friends with about this subject after you and i had talked about it.

he said it's not about the specific program being that much different from what he did in college but the amount of time that becomes dedicated to the craft and how specialized it is for each individual player.

Moreso that it becomes a main focus and they aren't having to worry about anything else other than football at this point. He said the expectation is that no matter what school or where a player comes from, the strength and conditioning staff with the chiefs expects that they can put 10 to 15 pounds of good weight on a guy in a full offseason if they're asked to by the coaching staff. 'm skeptical about that amount though, seems excessive.

10 pounds of muscle on an NFL frame is nothing

I started weight training during the summer of my 7th grade year with coach Sev and that continued every summer and every year in high school until the summer of my senior year, when he left for Rockhurst.

I can't even imagine what kind of training regime he's implemented 30 years later.

Yeah, that is bull shit if good weight means "muscle" and he is talking naturally. A noob might be able to put that type of muscle on in his first year, but guys with 4-8 years experience in the gym coming in no way. And I emphasize "naturally".

Not really sure about the "time" thing either unless he is referring to nutrition and rest. Any more than 4-5 hours week with weights will likely result in over training if they are "natural". I'd also question the way a lot of guys spend that newly found free time and if it's focused on S & C for football in the off season when they are back home away from the team.

I've got a cousin coaching at BS and he said they are on par if not better than the local colleges like MWSU and NWMSU.

Even the small schools start team strength and conditioning now in the 7th grade if they have a good coach and parents that don't bitch too much about their kids having to go above and beyond just standard practices and games.
