Question for people who have moved from High Cost of Living Areas to Low Cost Places

Hi everyone,

I am seriously considering moving from San Diego to South Carolina because all my extended family lives there and my immediate family is moving there at the end of the month.

I want to be near my family and it's just a bonus that all my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents live there too.

I've looked at places for rent and they are so cheap compared to what I pay now, but I'm wondering if it's possible to get comparable pay at a job in the new place or not?

It's a bit of a struggle for me here, I only make $14/hr at my job, but I work for a healthcare company and have free medical/dental insurance. But with my take home pay I'm pretty much paying rent, my utilities, and what I need to survive (food).

Would it be difficult for me to move there and ask for the same rate of pay at a similar job since the cost of living is so much lower?

Thanks for the input.

Also, Lowe's starts sales specialists at like $15+. You're getting jobbed by your current employer.

This is what I was trying to tell him.

Free health care is nice, but not if you have to scrape by just to eat Ramen Noodles, imho.

At $14/hr, how did you ever buy enough food to be fat?

That was a 26 year process.

Look at job sites out there and see what job openings there are. Start filling out applications online and talking to them about doing interviews over the phone. I wouldn't be dead set on working in your exact field as soon as you get out there. It's the ultimate goal but you don't want to move there and not have something lined up.

Eh, when I moved from Boston to Florida I thought I'd make about a third less but it turns out the pay was fifty percent less. Housing was damn cheap with a lot more house. I could never have what I have here when I lived there and I made good money on my home up there. The lifestyle is different. I don't need all the clothes I used to buy, restaurants are cheaper but groceries are much higher as is electricity and almost everything is electric including my stove.

North Carolina has been doing very well. I work there a few times a year and it's a great state to do business in. Depends on where you go though. Charlotte and Raleigh are nice. A lot of people from more expensive areas have been relocating there from what I've read. It's pretty too. $14 an hour is extremely low for Cali. I think you could make that in NC.

On thing you will have to decide if you move to SC is Tigers or Cocks. There is no middle ground.

You won't get the same pay. That is why businesses leave for lower cost areas with cheaper labor. You won't need the same pay either to have the same lifestyle.

Too bad he wants to move to SC. If it's not a political post you just gloss over the details huh?

I took a 20% pay cut when I moved from Houston to Greenville, sc to work in the Gas Turbine technology center for GE. Not a smart move by any means. I now have a house in Easley sc willing to sell cheap. 3 acres and on Saluda lake.

If you aren't on a deadline to move, don't until you've got a job in hand. Make it known in an interview your intention to move closer to family. Employers like that as it will sound like you are staying long term if you are hired.

You can never appreciate where you live until you've lived somewhere else. I have no idea how anyone could live in one area their entire life. It's very freeing to make a choice and go with it. I think you'd be very happy with this move. Lots of people like that area.
with all due respect, he should be able to find something for 14/hr without a Skype interview

If he's looking for something similar and the jobs are competitive in that field, I doubt that's true.
