Big Green Egg

Been looking at these and may buy one this spring. I figure some of you grillmasters own one. Are they worth the $$$? What size do you recommend? I'm looking at the Large or XL. Anything you don't like about it? Do you have it in the nest, table, or some custom built island/kitchen thing?

How do they work as grills? Smokers?

Discuss. Any pics are welcome.

I went over to a friend's house to watch the Chiefs-Chargers game a few weeks back. He smoked a prime rib with some Rufus Teague rub and some apple something or other in one of the trays of a BGE. He brought in around 3pm, cut and served. I was completely blown away at the flavor! Just incredible.

Now, one of these is on my list as well, so thanks for all of the info in this thread.

I've got both a weber and one of these. http://www.yodersmokers.com/ys640-pellet-grill.html

I use them for two totally different things.
My Dad said he had a Weber smoker a few years back (one of the cheapies) and said that while the food was awesome, it fell apart pretty quickly. Is that your experience or did my Dad not maintain it properly?

Thanks!

I had the same problem Dane. The cheaper grills can be used to cook great food but they just aren't build as sturdy imo.

I looked at a BGE one time. At the time, I couldn't justify the cost. I've since gotten a cheater Q rig and a cheap grill. They're not as good, but I've got a lot less money in it.

The BGE is amazing, nobody that criticizes them owns one. It's inly the people who don't have one that say something else is just as good. There is a reason it's the grill/smoker that everything else compares itself against.

Buy the large, the XL isn't quite as good at long smokes.

Mine (Smokey Mountain) still looks the same as the day I bought it. Well, except for the inside, which does show a little use, but I cover mine and it's kept under a patio when not in use.

Weber only makes the Smokey Mountain line of smokers. I wouldn't necessarily call them "cheapies," but they aren't a Kalamazoo either...

When you know you have arrived, you own this:

Check the link I put on the previous page.

There are currently a ton of kamado style grills now available. (We had the national BBQ and Patio Tradeshow here in SLC this past year and there were far too many to count in terms of products.) The Primo line is getting a lot of love right now.

Here is the floor plan from the 2014 HPB Expo:

Thanks for the info! I've had a Sears Kenmore seven burner stainless steel grill since 2003 and it's still awesome. I replaced the burners and heat shields last year about $100 and it's as good as new. It was somewhere around $1k on sale when I purchased it and worth every penny.

I kind of figured that my parents smoker fell apart due to the price point. The Kamando's look like a great option, so i'll look into those later this year. There's no use now because rainy season has begun (and it's actually raining this year).

My Dad has a Road King so I guess it stands to reason that he bought a cheap smoker.

I'm good with my grill. I can get it to 700 degrees, no problem. But I do want a smoker.
