Where Smith has earned some admiration is in his toughness; he didn't collapse under the pressure and become a shell like, say, a David Carr. He has handled all the adversity very well. Can you win with him? Yeah, I think so. Is he a top flight hall-of-famer-type like Manning or Brady? NO. But he's the best QB we've had since Green, who was the best QB we'd had since Dawson, so there's that. Kap? Well, I don't know how well his style of play will translate in the long run. We'll see. As to the OP, yes, I'd take Cousins as my starter over RG3 at this point. Hell, if I was the 'Skins GM I'd try to trade RG3. I don't think he can 1)stay healthy or 2)beat good defenses, which you'll have to do to go very far in the play-offs. |

If guys like Vernon Davis, Crabtree, an old Boldin and Frank Gore constitute a "near-historic level of offensive talent" then I suppose you can make an argument that Cutler has more talent around him.

I think Cousins is turning into a pretty serviceable QB. I don't know if I'd say he's better than RG3, but you can't make the club from the tub.

So, we care about this? How about the first-string and second-string OGs in Tampa?

Why are we talking about Smith in this thread anyway? I clicked on it to see the debate about RG3 and Cousins. Which side hijacked this thread? Smith-fans or detractors?

It is 32 starts because of Playoffs. In 2007 Alex Smith was still the youngest QB playing at the start of the season. In 2009-2010 Alex Smith threw the ball 30+ times 14 games out of 20 starts. 5 of those were actually 40+ Career Kaepernick is at 9 career games 30+. 49ers 4-5 record in those games. Never thrown 40 passes. |

I honestly don't know why Manning keeps getting brought up as a measuring stick for a franchise quarterback.
Manning is an awesome, even legendary, regular season QB. He puts up insane numbers, holds a lot of records. He's the modern day Marino, as Boomer Esiason put it when Manning was repeatedly booted from the playoffs by Brady and the Patriots. The only difference between Peyton Manning and Dan Marino is that in Peyton's one superbowl win Rex Grossman was quarterbacking the opposing offense, and not Joe Montana. Dan would've gotten himself a ring had he played a team like the Bears team that showed up in the SB. Manning has folded in more big games than he's come through and won. Brady made his name putting 2 in the chest and one in the head of Manning and the Colts' playoff runs during the formation of his legacy. So he gets a SB win against the Bears, with a lot of help from the Bears in turning the football over. Against the Saints and Drew Brees, Manning throws a pick 6 to basically guarantee defeat. Against the Seahawks....heh. A heh heh.... yeah. Manning, for as legendary as his regular season numbers are, should have a helluva lot more superbowl victories than he has if all his hype is gospel. Fact is, he does amazing against poor to great teams, but at the elite level his star fades significantly. **** Manning.

Tom Brady isn't any more or less clutch that Peyton Manning. It's not even a debate.

Wes Welker doesn't go full reerun and drop that wide open pass that was the catalyst for his exit from NE, Tom's got himself another ring. The purpose of a franchise QB is to win superbowls. Tom has delivered, and Peyton has not.

Tom hasn't delivered anything in over a decade other than choking in historical fashion when his team was 18-0.
Tom has 3 tainted Super Bowls (spygate) and was more of a system QB during those Super Bowls as well. When the Patriots went from the Patriots featuring Tom Brady to Tom Brady featuring the Patriots they stopped winning Super Bowls. Hardly a coincidence. Tom Brady is not, and has never been, on Peyton Manning's level. That is just truth. |
