I don't think the ending DLC actually changes anything, it just adds some postscripts. It's also free, so I'd say play it (even though I actually haven't - I have all the DLC but haven't played through any of it but From Ashes yet).

It's great if you don't mind the Super Meat Boy/Trials HD type of "**** I died, hit restart 141 times in a single level" gameplay. You don't have to play it at a frenetic pace, but you will die quickly and often.

The game play tightens up quite a bit in the second game. This series is about SciFi jerkoff fantasies. It is fantastic.
