People get pissed when they can't sneak candy into a theater

So, one of the movie theaters in town is going to start checking purses and backpacks of moviegoers. Several local news sources have posted links to the story on Facebook. The general consensus isn't about any rights being taken away. It's mostly women pissed off that guys aren't getting wanded, and, even more so, they're pissed that they won't be able to sneak candy into the movie anymore. They're even saying that's what this is truly about.

I'd hate to see these women trying to walk into Arrowhead.

I understand, but it's like tipping. "We can't make money on the ticket, so we'll subsidize it in other ways." Just charge more for a ticket (even double) if you want to bring your own food. The last time I was at the movies a medium popcorn and Coke was more than the ticket. That's a bad business model.

I like the experience of it as its own thing, but it definitely isn't the best way, for me, to focus on the movie. Maybe that's because we usually have my boys and about 6 of their friends and they're all raising hell running around the whole time outside the car with all the other kids who are doing the same thing. Went and saw Inside/out at the drive in. Can't really tell you shit about it except it had a bunch of characters whose colors reflected their mood and a weird looking elephant clown.

I know how to do the math. I've just never spent $40 on a movie ticket, as was stated. Obviously, if more than one person attends...it will cost more!

Of course not. That's why so many chains failed. Regal, for example, bought out several failing theater chains, such as United Artists and Edwards Cinema.

But it's the only model they have because it's largely controlled by movie studios.

As i stated, it's a piss ass model, but it's all they really have since the studios control the rights to the movies they show. And as such, they get to rake in all the profits.

And yes, teens do that shit all the time. ESPECIALLY with horror movies.
I know what stuff costs, although AMC is the most expensive around. You said it cost you $40 to sit in a theater, which I assumed was an exaggeration, but yeah, if you are including the cost of 4 people to sit in a theater, plus food for everyone, that is different.

As for teens blabbing the whole time, don't go to so many teenybopper movies.

Sure, you can have that stance and it certainly sucks paying those prices, but i liken it to pirating music.

Sure, anyone can get the music for free, but at what expense? Possibly driving that studio out of business?

I'm not asking you to have sympathy for them or anything like that. I'm just merely stating why their food policies are the way they are, and why their concession prices are so high.

Lemme ask you this...
I wait in line to buy a ticket...I go in...then there's another line to tear my ticket...WHY?

I refuse to wait more than 10 seconds in line to have my ticket torn. I just walk right around the line. No one has ever said anything. I maintain there is absolutely no reason they need to tear my ticket. So, what's the deal with that?

Couple of reasons.

We'd actually count the ticket stubs at the end of the night, as corporate needed that information for whatever reason. We'd also have to take those stubs and account for refunds and attach them to refund slips etc so all the numbers would jive. The General Manager would then take those stubs and ship them off to corporate. What they needed with them? I have no idea.

Secondly, to direct you to your theater so people aren't wondering around lost.

A torn ticket also shows admittance, so if someone came back wanting a refund, we knew whether they watched the movie or not. (not that it mattered, see post regarding free tickets).

The theater doesn't care if you're buying tickets or not because we're not making money there anyway. If we give you free tickets, then there's a high probability that you'll come back, and when you do, you'll probably buy concessions and then we make money.

If you want to see free movies, just complain. The Manager is trained to nod his head, act like he cares and then give you free tickets.

No joke. That was part of my training. When a customer had a complaint, i already knew what my default response was.
From what i understand, the theaters do make money from ticket sales, its just not a very big cut in the first few weekends. Its like an 80/20 split between the studios and theaters, then goes up the longer a film plays.

Huh?

When you buy a cd at Best Buy, they don't ask you to buy a new cd player at a 400% markup so they can make money. Sure they'd like you to, but they know not everyone will, so they mark up the cd to make a profit.
