To Amazon Prime or NOT to Amazon Prime

Sorry if Q, but I'm on the fence about doing the whole Amazon Prime thing. Seems like getting rid of Netflix all but pays for it, but wanted to ask the opinions of others in this Mecca of awesome knowledge called Chiefs Planet..

Is Amazon Prime really worth it over eBay when you buy, let's say, 5-7 items a month? I ask because I always do the "price+shipping" deal, so it seem like it's a wash at some level. That being said, "Prime" would ALWAYS mean two-day shipping, and that's something I hardly ever do on eBay, so it could be a deal that makes it worth it enough to buy 15-20 things a month. The whole "eliminating some of the instant gratification culture/concern" deal...

Oh, and I've heard that if you use an "edu" account it's free for six months (perhaps not a big deal over a lifetime!!), but is then like half the cost. Does anybody know if that's true? If so, and it' the son who has the "edu" account, how does "Dad" pull off that scam without having the kid able to buy pretty-much anything he's ever wanted?

Thanks in advance... Just looking for some opinions before I leap...

That's a good point. Not sure how much of your motivation is replacing Netflix. But Prime videos isn't nearly as good.

it's different. Of couirse they did just add some old HBO catalog, so that may help it.

It was always a screaming deal for me because of the free 2 day shipping on most items as Im an internet shopping "whore". Others have pointed out that the streaming service isn't very good (I have a sound bar and the sound skips a lot). However, in addition to their library of free streaming videos they just added a lot of the HBO library (Sopranos, Wire, True Blood, Rome, Deadwood, 6 Ft Under) to Prime Streaming....Its now absolutely worth it.

You can also share it with 4 others, so find 4 buddies to split it with and it costs even less.

We have AP due to the shipping savings. We buy pretty much everything online.

We have both AP and Netflix and our usage is about 70/30 in favor of AP.

The motivation would only be to replace ~$100 a year cost in one area and pick it up in another. Making it a wash. We don't watch enough Netfix to make it worth it (since we have to watch it through the Wii (or spend more coin on a purpose-built box), so it seems to be a way of giving up something we don't us a lot, and getting something that might make our lives better (in another area), but kind of keep what we had...

The question now is "kind of" is just that KIND OF!!!

Hmmmm, sounds to me like this thread might had just saved you ~$100 a year (unless the 30% is super important to you)...

Another question about AP and the edu email... Since it'll be my son's edu email, how much does that email address matter beyond proving you're a student? Or would all the AP information flow through my son's email account at school?

Not the worst thing in the world, and the coin saved might mean it's worth it, I just want to know if that up-front effort and little bit of extra work (proving you are a student) is just that, a little bit of work, or do I have to count on the son sending us all the other information...

From what I've seen, the "main" account would be build using his edu account, garnering the savings, but after that "Mom and Dad" get "buddy" accounts. Is that about right?

For streaming, Netflix is easily better. The selection is just infinitely larger with Netflix, and includes far more popular shows. Purchasing TV/Movies, Amazon has an edge. But just normal streaming selection included with the subscription, Netflix is much better in my opinion.

Lifehacker did a review of the most popular shows, and their availability on both streaming platforms.

http://lifehacker.com/tv-streaming-h...-pr-1536006625

Quote:
Setting aside that Netflix is breaking new ground and winning awards with its streaming-only shows like House of Cards, Netflix has more than twice as many shows available to stream as Amazon Prime (122 shows vs 58 out of 250). Not only did Netflix have more than Amazon, it had just shy of half of all the shows surveyed (48.8%). So, unless you're looking for something obscure or extremely old, you've got roughly a coin-flip's chance of finding it on Netflix. P

On top of that, it has more shows that Hulu Plus and Amazon don't carry. Netflix had 54 exclusive shows (among streaming services surveyed) versus only 17 that were exclusive to Amazon. This includes big-name shows like Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead, which you can purchase on Amazon, but not stream with a Prime subscription. In other words, even if you already pay for Prime, a Netflix subscription might be worth it.

Prime just added some HBO shows like The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, Oz and Eastbound and Down for all season as part of your prime membership.

Have you considered an Amazon Fire TV? That would give you the best of everything!

http://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV/dp/B00...f_=oc_daisy_rm

$99 for Fire TV. It can do Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, in addition to running XBMC. Run XBMC for a while, and you'll barely touch Netflix or Amazon Prime Video again........

Plus, the purchase gives you a month of Prime membership for free. Test it out, if you like it you have the best available method for watching it. Plus you still have access to all the other stuff if you want.
