Da'Rick Rodgers Released

Chiefs release WR Da'Rick Rogers
Adam Teicher, ESPN Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Talented but troubled wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was released by the Kansas City Chiefs just hours before they were to begin their mandatory minicamp. Da'Rick Rogers has caught only 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns during his NFL career.

Rogers, 23, was one of the SEC's best wide receivers in 2011, when he caught 67 passes for more than 1,000 yards and scored nine touchdowns for Tennessee. But he was subsequently thrown off the team for disciplinary problems and transferred to Tennessee Tech.

Rogers has been unable to make it in the NFL. He signed with the Chiefs, his third NFL team, in January but hadn't been impressive during offseason practice. The Chiefs also may have felt comfortable releasing Rogers because of the emergence of rookie wide receiver Chris Conley, who has played well in practice.

Rogers pleaded guilty in May in Indianapolis to resolve a 2014 DUI case. He was sentenced to one day in jail and six months of probation.

The Chiefs also released offensive lineman Kelvin Palmer, who recently signed as a free agent, and signed offensive lineman Tavon Rooks of Kansas State.

Suggesting that KC wanted to see how far along Conley was.. and that he "passed the test".. making Da'Rick expendable.

I don't feel that bad about our WR core overall. Yeah Avant isn't good, but I like Maclin, Conley and Wilson along with DAT taking some reps.

Hell I like our 7th round pick over scrubs like Hemmingway. Dude has great hands. At least we can rely on him to catch a ****ing pass.

I'd like to see us draft one more WR early next year to add to this young group.

Avant is a guy most receiving groups absolutely need. Especially with a group as young as our receivers are. He runs great routes, has dependable hands and knows the offense as "second nature". It's not a "coincidence" that as soon as Avant got here last year, Wilson started kicking ass THE NEXT WEEK. The offense also started to really click around that same time.

Alex Smith had 901 passing yards in those 3 games.

Having him around in 2015 is going to help guys like Conley, Wilson and Thomas really kill it in this offense going forward and I can't believe so many here dog on the guy.

Read this as well. Not sure he can make the cut, but he has promise as a returner, and I'd prefer him to Hemingway.

Not sure what to make of Binns, Cook, or Brown.. but Cook also got some positive bits in practice.

Good post. I am cool with having him around, but I don't prefer he steal a lot of significant reps away from the others. Make him an assistant WR coach FTW!

KC had the highest % of dropped passes in the NFL last year. Over 7%

Going from that to guys with great hands like Maclin (only dropped 1 pass last year) Avant, Wilson and Thomas is going to really help the efficiency of this offense.

Let's roll
I doubt Conley had anything to do with it. That's really just throwing shit at the wall. Conley was never going to be cut, so it's not like he and Rodgers were competing for a roster spot.

If i had to guess, i'd assume Rodgers didn't pick up the playbook very well. To be cut this early, it's gotta be a mental thing.

When you have a guy as smart and talented as Conley is, he probably just dwarfs a guy like Rogers in the film/meeting rooms and made the coaching staff start to realize how long it would take for Rogers to contribute in this offense at the pace he was at.

At one point, you have to cut bait and realize that a guy will never reach his potential.
