Would Arrowhead's Toys in the Attic sell today?

Was bored when I got home and wanted to listen to some music. So I was perusing and saw Arrowsmith's Toys in the Attic amonst the multitudes of CD's. It's been a long time since I listened to this particular album. But I think it still holds up. Yeah it's Bronco week. **** off. Just wondering.Remember I was bored. And maybe feeling a little old.

The issue is that the best songwriters of today aren't writing music geared towards rock fans, because they're very few and far between. Composers are writing music that sells in today's market, not the market from 20 or 30 or 40 years ago.

Nobody cares.

Being able to play guitar proficiently is old hat, just like playing the violin or viola or piano, et al, was when rock and roll was invented. The best musicians in the world play in symphonies and while it's true that excellent guitarist, bassists and drummers are needed for the occasional film score or to perform live on American Idol or whatnot, the days of it being "exciting" or "amazing" are long gone.
Ed Sheeran really? Is this really where were at in the music business today. Where it's come down to what makes money over talent? Strike that i know the answer. I'm a musican. Not a great one. But the drive flows thru my veins. I'm not going to quit. I love the Blues. That's my genre. I'll keep writing and playing with hope. And never stop playing guitar. And I hope no kid reading this says I'm not quitting either cause some guy in Hollywood says this isn't making money for him.

Oh I get it completely. I just think most are looking at the bottom line instead of taking a chance on being a Brian Epstein.

Rock still ain't dead Dane...

You want guitar rock? I got your guitar rock right here:

Absolutely insanely good band (though they do fall a bit into the Jack Whiteisms that Dane mentioned earlier, but so what, they still kick ass):

There are tons of people just like you out there who love playing and won't stop. Which is great, that doesn't mean the chances of rock/blues or guitar based music coming back as mainstream music aren't really slim.

You never know though. I'm not sure anyone foresaw the explosion of underground punk in the 70's or the rise of thrash metal and hip-hop in the 80's but they happened.

Societal discontent breeds amazing music in all genres, and there is plenty of that to go around these days.

The Blues won't die because the blues never quit for people. Same with rock just at a faster tempo. BUT it has to force it's way back into the mainstream somehow, someway. What goes around comes around. Maybe not like the wishbone but like the I formation and the Osborne triple option.

Let me know when any of those acts actually earn any money, let alone sell a few million copies.

I friends with Ian Moore, who's a pretty good blues player.

He's playing coffee shops in SF as a singer/songwriter because he can't earn a dime playing the blues.

You're really out of your element, Alan. And I'm not just "some guy in Hollywood"' which I find to be very insulting.

Kings of the North are the kinds of bands I'm talking about. Why don't they get the pub? These guys are kick ass!! Though if they had a bass player of my caliber they'd be so much better.

I'm not trying to insult you Dane. I find your takes on music to be very informative. If not enlightening. But somehow I think the group think in your business is being shortsighted. The status quo is not always the status quo. Things change what's the next trend? Could it be back to talented musicians?

Hey, that's your job.

I'm just letting you know that there are some really good and new bands rocking hard out there right now and are building their pub.

Oh, and the Dorothy clip that I linked earlier? I just heard one of their songs on the television about two minutes ago. Looking it up, this song is currently in/a part of a Levi's , Gatorade, Disney and Skullcandy advertisements. And they just had their EP drop in January/February '15. That's saying that someone out there is wanting a little new rock and roll, right?

This one:

Good for them! Seriously!

I'm not sure it's an indicator that someone wants rock and roll more than an indicator that the client wanted that type of music for their campaign. Trust me, I get plenty of requests for it as well.

But in the grand scheme of things, we all earn more money from an ad agency placement and TV/Film placement than by writing a record and touring for months on end.

The business has changed dramatically and those who can and have adapted do very well.

I couldn't wait to learn guitar when I was a kid. Wanted to play like jimmy page. Forcefed my kids guitar lessons and they all can play. Not one of them gives a shit about listening to rock or playing it. They all listen to earl sweatshirt and stuff like that. Couldn't have predicted that in a million years.
