Would Arrowhead's Toys in the Attic sell today?

Was bored when I got home and wanted to listen to some music. So I was perusing and saw Arrowsmith's Toys in the Attic amonst the multitudes of CD's. It's been a long time since I listened to this particular album. But I think it still holds up. Yeah it's Bronco week. **** off. Just wondering.Remember I was bored. And maybe feeling a little old.

Interesting thread. I had never heard toys in the attic. Googled it and listened to part of it. Also didnt know that "rock" is thought of as dying. I listen to older country so I have no opinion. But enjoyed the read anyways.

I don't want to piss you off. However, all you are saying is "you're wrong." and that's about it.

Hell, I agree with the vast majority of what you've said. However, I think that you are slightly exaggerating the doom and despair in the music industry. Record year in concerts - for the third year in a row.

Digital sales are down. CD's, while down again, still sell as evidenced by:

CDs are dead.

That doesn't seem like such a controversial statement. Maybe it should be. The music business sold 141 million CDs in the U.S. last year. That's more than the combined number of tickets sold to the most popular movies in 2014 (Guardians) and 2013 (Iron Man 3). So "dead," in this familiar construction, isn't the same as zero.

I'm sure that the music industry is, as you say, a little more tenuous than it once was, but that's not particularly localized to just the music industry itself. (Economy still isn't "back" the way that they want us to believe that it is, though it's substantially better than it was.)

Nearly every number in Nielsen's 2014 annual review of the music industry is preceded by a negative sign, including chain store sales (-20%), total new album sales (-14%), and sales of new songs online (-10.3%). Two things are up: streaming music and vinyl album sales. Somewhere in America, an enterprising sociologist is fitting this into an interesting theory about how the emergence of new technologies in media ironically amplifies our interest in pop-culture anachronisms.

So what about vinyl? It is rising, yes, rising like a wee baby phoenix, from a prodigious pile of ashes. Nine million two hundred thousand vinyl LPs were sold in 2014, up 51 percent annually, even faster than the growth in video streams. Nine million is a lot more than zero, but commercially speaking, its overall impact on the market is meager. Vinyl accounts for 3.5 percent of total album sales. The CD market (which is dead, remember) is 15-times larger.

And how about the hits? The top 1 percent of bands and solo artists now earn about 80 percent of all revenue from recorded music, as I wrote in "The Shazam Effect." But the market for streamed music is not so concentrated. The ten most-popular songs accounted for just shy of 2 percent of all streams in 2013 and 2014. That sounds crazy low. But there are 35 million songs on Spotify and many more remixes and covers on SoundCloud and YouTube, and one in every 50 or 60 online plays is going to a top-ten song. With the entire universe of music available on virtual jukeboxes, the typical 3.5-hour listening session still includes at least one song selected from a top-ten playlist that accounts for .00003 percent of that universe. The long tail of digital music is the longest of tails. Still, there is a fat head at the front.

I get it. The music industry has basically reflected the rest of society where the 1%'ers have it all and the rest are fighting for the scraps.

However, that doesn't mean that rock is dead and kids aren't still making music.

Sure, they aren't getting paid like they did in '89 or whenever, but they aren't stopping making music.

I really don't know what you want out of this. I think I understand that you don't think that "Toys in the Attic" would sell today because you don't believe that anything is selling today, that nobody cares about rock and roll versus EDM and that streaming has killed the profitability of the music industry.

Okay.

But people are still making music and enjoying doing that.

And I was just giving you shit about Grohl. Geez...

Should I care if the record industry is hurting financially or if artists have a harder time making big bucks if I'm still finding new music I like anyway?

BTW, I'm glad you've found a way to turn music into money and I don't doubt you're giving good advice for others who want to do the same.

I would be lost without CD's, haven't ever downloaded a single song.

Its fun to go buy an "album" and directly support an artist you like, its also nice to have something tangible that isn't gonna get wiped out if my computer crashes.

FTR, I couldn't care less if the record industry itself earns massive revenues or breaks even. But when artists can't earn a living because their music is streamed or downloaded illegally, the end result will be less people creating pop music because soon enough, creators will realize that it's not financially viable.

Thanks. At this point, there is a way to create music for a living but like most things in life, everything changes. Adapt or die.
