***OFFICIAL Lawn and Landscaping Thread***

So, who out there is obsessed with having green grass?

Are you installing a flowerbed and some shrubs?

Do you need a sprinkler system installed?

Do you just want to brag?

Let's talk about lawns in here.

I don't really have any pictures of the lawn before and after. But it was really bad, lprobably 75% weeds. I did the front and backyard lawn in separate years because it would have just been too much doing it all at once since it all had to be redone. I did the same method both times starting with the backyard.

The first step was to spray it with Round Up to kill everything. I then cut and bagged it twice. I had to do it twice because I needed to get it as short as possible. After that it was the verticut rental. Then came the worst part. Pulling up all of the thatch from the verticut was a huge pain but it had to be done to ensure good contact for the seeds with the soil. From there it was just water and fertilizer with the occasional weed-b-gone. This was done in 2013. Weed-b-gone is no longer necessary at all.

Then last fall I did the front yard the same way. I was a little late doing it so I ended up putting more seeds down this spring. I found a product from Home Depot that I highly recommend. It is a food for new grass plus a weed killer. It works awesome because it keeps the weeds from growing, which typically grow faster than the new grass, but it also fertilizes the seedlings. It greatly improved the results both in quickness and effectiveness.

I love a super dense lawn that is sharply edged into a nice square shape.

Do you use your weed eater, an attachment for it, or a purpose built edger? I've been using an attachment on my weed eater, but it gets a bit tiring after a while. I'm considering purchasing a purpose built edger so I can knock that edging out quickly and easily.

That sounds like an epic pain. Maybe it would have been easier to have someone with a bobcat to come out and just scrape off the top couple of inches, then bring an inch or so of new dirt in. I had that done in a couple of areas of my yard followed up by hydroseed and it has done well.

1+ acre and a long driveway, sidewalk, and roadfront = not too bad, but pretty crappy in the middle of the summer.

Having a lawn not filled with weeds and crap is not really that difficult, but, you have put some time into it.
You can always follow Tobins lawn program. He is not my cup of tea since his shows are 75% advertisements and stupid jokes about food, but his program will work like a champ.

WOW! My trimmer attachment is looking weak after two years and it cost about half as much as your edger.

How's the motor? Does it bog down easily? I'm always wary of electric equipment. The downside is I'd have to haul around a ton of electric cord since I have a huge yard.

It was definitely a huge pain. But it really didn't cost that much, other than my time. I made sure to just do it right the first time so I didn't have to keep messing with it.
