Used to have to listen to my (now ex) bil talk non stop about his construction work as well as him holding forth on subjects about which he knew nothing but acted like he was a ****ing expert. Couldn't say shit to him as the whole family babied him. Thank God that's over.
This year it's brunch at a local hotel, then golf, then dinner at the same place, then drinks til it's time to go to my room and sleep the sleep of the grateful...

For the first time in 26 years, my wife and I aren't spending TG with either set of parents. It will just be us and the boys this year at home. We are going to have a simple dinner and just kick back and play games (Ticket To Ride, dominoes and pinochle) and relax.
We usually go to my wife's parents' for TG but it's a shitload of driving for a couple of days and it is hectic as hell. Dinner itself is ok but my wife and her mother stress out over it for a two days and then it's over within an hour, with everyone stuffing their faces and then heading into the other room to watch football. Plus, now we would have to drive out of the way to drop our son back at college which adds a bunch of extra driving (he can catch a ride back from here out home instead). |

Also, Pablo - we always had deviled eggs with Thanksgiving and Christmas when I was growing up. My wife's family didn't though, so I don't expect them anymore.

Colleague says he hates it because he has to go to the mother in law's home. She's 90 years old and still drinks alcohol like a kid that just turned 21. He says she's a mean drunk too and they have to babysit her after she finally gets too hammered.
God I laughed my ass off at that. I also thought **** it. More power to her, she's lived longer than most of us will. Especially drinking like that. She should at least be a nice drunk though. |

Never even crossed my mind to drink on a holiday.
My family is scandalized to burn off the bourbon on top of the English pudding.

They leave me to clean up. I'm kind of a completion freak. I always hate dirty dishes sitting around. So every year as soon as dinner's done (we host my inlaws almost every year) I spend up to two hours cleaning the kitchen and doing dishes while they drink wine and chat.
I guess I don't mind, I like getting it done and done right, but if the wife and mother in law could do it one year and let me get comfortable with a bottle of scotch that wouldn't suck. |
