McKnight was a high school phenom -- considered the best running back in the country. He played college ball at USC. He was drafted by the NY Jets in 2010.

Standing over a guy you've already shot and putting another round into his body might be termed "excessive", even under Stand Your Ground laws. Assuming the reports from the scene are 100% accurate, of course.

New Orleans has a law that if you believe you are being car jacked you can defend with what means you feel is necessary.

That's a minor variation on the law in the majority of states.

There hasn't been a duty to retreat in most jurisdictions for years and it's been trending in that direction for probably 20. The left started in on this 'stand your ground' bullshit with Zimmermann only because it gave them grist for their mill but the alternative is simply worthless.

Duty to retreat laws are bullshit that were causing people that were genuinely in fear of their own lives to end up in serious legal trouble because they couldn't think straight in a life or death situation. When someone pulls a gun on you, you shoot them back and then go to trial and the key question is "well why didn't you just run away?" rather than "Was the person that pulled a gun on you allowed to do so?" well that's just bullshit.

The problem here has nothing to do with the stand your ground law but rather the "reasonably believes that he is in imminent danger of losing his life or receiving great bodily harm". Reasonably and imminent are the key words there.

If he actually got out of his vehicle and pumped another round into McKnight, neither of those words apply.

The sheriff bit his tongue a few times. He said he doesn't want to taint future witness testimony. He did however say he was worried that pushing for an arrest would force them to make a case or reveal evidence they don't want revealed yet. Or something to that effect.

He seemed like he really wanted to get across that they worked with the man that raised mcknight and that(this part is me concluding) that the other guy should be concerned they would be biased in mcnights defense if anything.

That makes sense.

If there were immediate issues with the witness on the scene or if there were other people saying different things. Or if there was physical evidence suggesting something to the contrary, they have to be careful in how they deal with this. They need to get their case put together before they arrest the guy.
