Remembering Buck Buchanan

Nice little movie about Buck I hadn't seen before. He was special. Chiefs defense was really blessed in the 1960s. Next HOF guys should be Otis Taylor and Johnny Robinson. Crime that both of those guys aren't in the HOF.

The players on that Championship team were so outstanding.

So many to admire.

I still contend that he may be the greatest Chief of all time.

The Chiefs basketball team came to our school to play & he was actually quite a player. Great guy too. Every Chief I’ve met from that team was first class all the way around.

Once met Buck during his playing days, as a kid. Biggest thrill, and he looked like a mountain.

I must have been 14 years old, which places this story in 1990 or 1991. I was with my mom at The Jones Store in Metcalf South mall looking for Chiefs gear. We were walking out and I saw one of the tallest men I had ever seen; we were walking toward one another. My mom stopped walking and told me it was Buck Buchanan. I knew the name because every family member told me he was straight badass.

Anyway, Buck walked up to me unprompted and pointed at my Chiefs hat I was wearing. He said “Hello young man, I sure do like your hat. Would you mind if I signed it for you?” I’m not sure exactly what I said but it was something like “Hell yeah!” He signed it Buck Buchanan HOF.

That hat has been on lock down for years. I should pull it out and spend some time with it.

There were so many of those early Chiefs that kept on giving to the community long after their playing days. Terrifying on the field, genuine heroes and good guys off. Buck was one of those guys.

For what?

A guy that threw for fewer than 200 yards a game, with 4 TDs and 6 interceptions in in 6 games.

Credit for that?

That team won on the strength of it's defense.

One of the all time great defenses that doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves.

And Buck was the anchor.

Mike Livingston did a nice job filling in for the injured Dawson going unbeaten 6-0 as the starter. We all know the Defense was the reason the CHIEFS won the Super Bowl. Len Dawson threw 5 INT's vs. OAKLAND in a losing effort on 11/23/69 at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. Dawson had another game to forget when the CHIEFS played at OAKLAND on 12/13/1969 completing 2 of 6 passes for 47 yards in another loss. Not exactly impressive stats from Lenny. After throwing 5 picks in their first meeting, Dawson only threw it 6 times in the second meeting? My point is that Mike Livingston is kind of forgotten in this Super Bowl winning team when he filled in for Dawson. And he was the third string QB only starting after Jacky Lee went down in his first start.
