No family in the area perhaps?

I'm not camping out but I won't see any family this weekend.

Yeah, that's always funny when people say that. Who are you to tell someone what they should and shouldn't do with their time? Maybe they see their families all the damn time and don't need that one bullshit ass holiday to celebrate. Maybe they have no family.

Maybe they're camping out with their family, enjoying leftovers in the parking lot of Best Buy, reminiscing about the 10 hours they just spent together.

Meh, I honestly hate the business' for doing this to their employees.

Is it voluntary for all employees? If so, then I can see it. I have a hard time believing they don't require all hands on deck though. The short stint I did at Best Buy, Black Friday was required for everyone. I would think Thanksgiving day would not be any different.

Time and a half seems to be little compensation for dealing with all those crazy people, but I'm sure it's just another day to work for many... I've worked Thanksgiving Day and did tech support on a few Black Fridays, and it's not a big deal when it's an expectation. Do the family stuff another day, get holiday pay, and maybe even another vacation day.

From Fatwallet:
Quote:
I respect everyone's opinion... that being said: Wal-Mart employees, and I'm sure many others... (I have relatives that work at Wal-Mart) love it.... they get a fully catered Turkey dinner (not cheap), double time, and 25% off of their entire next purchase, no exclusions. I'll work all day at Wal-Mart on Thanksgiving to save that much money, and be given a good meal on top of it.... (I don't need the $, it's a matter of my family and I enjoying dinner together whenever we like, being thankful whenever we like... not just on a designated day of the year, so working on this day makes no difference to us)

To each their own, but since someone always feels the need to chime in on a deal post where a store being opened on Thanksgiving is mentioned, I think it's fair game to chime in on why they shouldn't be so self-centered and may want to actually gauge how the workers feel. From my experience it's about a 50/50 split on them wanting to work or not given the extra pay and benefits they receive to do so.... the entitlement generation needs to relax a little bit. Hundreds of thousands of Americans work on every holiday, why is it such a big deal to raise the issue about retail workers during Christmas season only? Why aren't you protesting for paramedic to get triple pay on every holiday, or ER nurses to get 3 extra vacation days after working a holiday, or gas station attendants to get 15 free fill ups after working on Christmas? (my favorite one, because we all need to stop and get gas, so for decades no complaints about them having to work not on holidays, but Heaven forbid a cashier has to work at Target) What about movie theater workers? Snow plow drivers? Taxi cab drivers? The list goes on, it's unfortunate to only see people get riled up about stores having big sales and requiring people to work when so many other professions suffer from the same issue year after year for far far longer.

I shop any day a store is open and I feel like shopping. It supports the business to continue paying the workers. I also go to see friends and family that are working, bring them dinner and see if I can do anything for them, and I've been fairly vigilant about donating to my local hospital, fire and police fundraisers to show my support for their hard work and tireless efforts.

Last but not least, for the people who "only shop online" because they don't agree with retail workers having to work holidays: Do you think there is literally no staffing involved during holiday online sales? That shows a very deep level of misunderstanding, if you believe so....

Meanwhile, my brother in law picked up a couple of 65" TVs from walmart for me. lol

A lot of good points brought up. In a perfect world no one would work on any holiday but that's just impractical.

People travel and need gas. Crime/domestic disputes/traffic violations don't stop so we need police/fire/paramedics. A ton of restaurants are open 365 days a year as well. Why all the fuss for retail workers?

I don't partake in the Black Friday nonsense myself. Last time I did was back in 09. I waited until about 6 pm to hit up Best Buy. Ended up walking out with a new TV and an Xbox 360 bundle.

Would prefer to save my money at this particular point in time.
