Covitz:Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’

Former Chief Brandon Flowers calls himself the ‘best corner in football’

Cornerback Brandon Flowers may have lost his job with the Chiefs, but he didn’t lose his self-confidence.

Flowers, who was quickly signed by AFC West rival San Diego last week, 11 days after his release by the Chiefs, blew his horn pretty loudly in an interview with NFL Network last week.

Here’s an excerpt from that interview with Flowers, who last year made the first Pro Bowl in his six-year career, though he had been moved from left cornerback to a slot corner early in the season.

On who’s the best cornerback in the NFL:

“First off, let me must say, I am the best corner in football. Don’t let my injuries last year fool you and take my name from that top list. One guy whose game I definitely respect throughout the years was (Darrelle) Revis. Coming from a system that he played in, it’s a lot of man-to-man being played, him shadowing receivers, and he definitely put in that work. Not to say anything else bad about the other corners, but Revis is definitely a corner I respect in this league.”

On how he felt when he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs:

“I was very surprised when it happened. I knew I hit the cap pretty hard, but I thought if I was going to get traded or released it was going to be in February or March sometime. The timing that they did it, it kind of hit me. That’s why I stayed in the division. I wanted to let the Chiefs know that’s why they hit me. I want to let them know how I felt about it.”

On his familiarity staying within the division affecting his decision:

“That made it comfortable. I also respected San Diego playing them throughout the years (and) how they run their organization. I always had respect for their players. It’s always hard fought, tough games when we played San Diego. I always sit on the other opposing side that I would love to play for a guy like Philip Rivers. He’s so fiery. He’s always got that attitude. He’s got that ‘want to.’ You can’t ask for nothing else from your leader. I think it’s the perfect match for me.”

On his favorite thing from Kansas City and his favorite teammate:

“My favorite thing about Kansas City was the fans. It felt like I never left college playing for Kansas City. No matter if we were winning four games … it was still crazy. You go to the malls, and everyone had on red. It was crazy. The fans were definitely my favorite thing about K.C.”

“As far as teammate-wise, Derrick Johnson and Jamaal Charles were both my boys. (I’ve) been teammates with those guys for years. Off the field, we were always together. Those are my two. I can’t pick one over the other.”

Of course, he quit in the INdy playoff game last year. Had a "concussion" tackling a guy. Embarrassing.

He wasn't allowed to go back in...

It would be stupid to stay in the division to play for a team that doesn't have any hope just for reprisals, when he could have went somewhere else and competed for a Championship. Or is it really that they were the only place he could start.
I hope he gets bitch slapped all season.

I always liked Flowers as a Chief. Too bad his play didn't justify his salary. But you gotta give it up for the guy who still shows admiration for the Chiefs fans. I wish him nothing but the best. Except I don't want San Diego to win anything.

I agree and why the NFL is getting to big for it's britches IMO and more difficult to watch as time goes on especially with all the rule changes. It's becoming a manufactured reality sports game anymore. Never thought I could say that about my favorite sport on TV to watch but with the players, "It's all about ME !!!

Nah, it's all about saving face. This caught him off guard for sure. If he had that much admiration for the fans he would have been sober enough in his declining abilities to take a pay cut BUT no it's about him and $$ and he is smart enough to know with our high tech social media for communication and weak ego he has to come off as 'supposedly the best CB in the league' but in turn be liked by everyone. It's all about Brandon I'm afraid but if he can get the $$ more power to him. San Diego will be disappointed in the long run. Here are to BIG WRs aaaaaaaaaaaall day !!

Flowers is the Greatest Corner to ever play the game. If he retired today they would waive the time limit and induct him the same day. He should have a holiday named after him. We all should feel lucky we got to see the Greatest Football Player and Athlete of All Time play.

Just hearing the name Brandon Flowers sends goosebumps up my arms at how great he is-I am humbled- but feel blessed to live in his huge shadow of awesomeness. He will be missed but never forgotten. Long live King Flowers!!

If anyone would like to donate to the Brandon Flowers foundation to build a statue outside of Arrowhead in honor of the Greatness- that is Brandon Flowers- please let me know. We can dedicate the statue the first game of the season when the Chiefs put him in the Ring of Honor.

I sent an email to the HOF as well. Flowers will be the first player to be inducted while still active. Plans are being made as we speak to build the Brandon Flowers memorial wing onto the HOF so fans can bask in the solitude of his awesomeness forever.

Deal is he'd still be a Chief if we were talking about the same contract he signed with SD. The decision to cut him was a financial one. I don't know why Brandon was "surprised" by the timing - the Chiefs waited till the timing worked for them. Such is life in the NFL. I wish him well. Next...
