Alligator drags child into water at Disney's Grand Floridian hotel

Deputies were searching late Tuesday night for a toddler who was dragged into the water by an alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa earlier in the evening, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The 2-year-old child was dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon about 9:30 p.m., Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva said.

Deputies were searching the waters and put crime-scene tape around area to block it off. Multiple emergency vehicles filled the front drive of the Victorian-style hotel and a helicopter hovered overhead.

The child, whose name was not available, has not been found as of 11 p.m.



Some witnesses said they saw the toddler along the beach near the water, but no eye-witnesses to him being dragged into the water by an alligator were available for comment Tuesday night.

The hotel is an upscale luxury resort owned by Disney. It is one of three hotels on the monorail line, just one stop away from the Magic Kingdom Park.

Hotel guest A.J. Jain and his family were visiting Disney from Georgia and said he and his kids were playing on the beach near the scene of the incident earlier Tuesday.

“I’m just here to say a prayer,” he said. “I can’t imagine what those parents are going through. It’s been one tough week in Orlando.”

It is not clear if the missing child was staying at the hotel.

Witnesses said the family was on the beach, and the boy's sister was in a playpen about 20 to 30 yards from the water,

Massachusetts is like the anti-Australia. We have a couple venomous snake types, but they are very rare, and not very aggressive. No real venomous spiders to speak of. We have some bears, but they are generally smaller black bears, and also not very aggressive. They are also far, far fewer in Massachusetts than, say, Maine or New Hampshire.

And despite Jaws being set, basically, in Martha's Vineyard, the last time someone died by shark attack in Massachusetts was like 1956 or something ridiculous. In fact, around here, humans SAVE great whites. Like, "oh, wow, a predator -- that's really rare, and it's in trouble!! Quick Martha, save it!"

I think even that's over-estimating what you could do in the situation. He could easily have made a decision that he would die in that fight if necessary. When the alligator decided to swim away in dark, murky water, he could not have stopped it.

Yeah, I didn't realize it was around 9pm.

The light would be bad enough that you'd lose sight of the gator in short order.

Very little the guy could've done.

To whatever extent there can be good news, sounds like the toddler just drowned. Unless he's been to swim lessons and has been taught to blow bubbles underwater, the 'hold your breath' instinct just isn't there. He probably got pulled in, took a big gulp and within seconds the lights went out.

There's not much of a silver lining to find when a toddler dies, but that's as close as I can come up with.

I always kind of assumed that you pilgrims tamed nature long ago. Your biggest animal killers may be falling animal-shaped signs.

I hope the poor kid didn't suffer.

Those parents will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. They will NEVER be the same. They will be divorced in less than 5 years. I know at least 4 couples who had tragedies befall their kids and everyone got divorced.

Not always. My wife and I lost our son 6 1/2 years ago. We're still together, and still in love. Not gonna lie, it's a difficult thing to overcome, and at times I didn't know if we would make it (or even if I could make it). But we are proof it's possible.
