The question at hand isn't what he'd receive on the open market but what Seattle is willing to pay in order to retain him.

That said, there's no shortage of teams that would be willing to overpay for his services.

Seahawks last 2 drafts from 2013 and 2014 look pretty bad.

That's who they are relying on to replace star players they will be forced to let go in 2016.

At any rate, his market value absolutely is the question. That's probably the main drum his agent is beating during these negotiations. There's no telling what a team like Houston or Cleveland would pay for a young, ascending, near-elite signal caller.

Keep in mind that Smith just signed an extension worth about $17 mil per year, Tannehill as well at about $19 mil per, and Newton at about $20 mil per.

No, his value in free agency is very different than his value to the Seahawks, obviously. Otherwise, he'd have been made a competitive Top Five offer by now.

His defense played lights out that postseason. They only gave up an average of 19 PPG in four games, three of which were on the road and the final on a neutral field for the Super Bowl.
