Ten Things About Today's Game: Week 14

Ten Things About Tonight’s Game: Week 14

10. On Monday I found out my best friend Gary flew back from the Atlanta Game with a nasty sinus infection. Sunday Night my wife was hacking up fur balls and sounded like Tom Waits. Both were supposed to go to the game with me tonight. Both begged off. So instead of sitting in the freezer, I sold my seats to Wazu, who took his son, and sold the other ticket to another CPer Boise Chief, who had a battle with American Airlines to get out of Dallas in time to watch the game tonight. Hope they enjoyed the seats.

9. I put a frozen lasagna in the oven, a fire in the fireplace, a couple rocks in a glass filled with Crown Royal and Lemonade (try it, it’s tasty) and sat back and enjoyed the game in my La-Z-Boy with Meesh Meesh the Cat in my lap. It would have been great to be there, but it was nice to enjoy the game without freezing to death. And I was glad that a couple of our CP brethren got to attend in my stead. KC has won eight straight division games, and are now “tied” with the Faid for the AFC West at 10-3, although we’ve now swept them. So it's not really a tie. So nice to win a game like this in front of a national TV audience, especially after we got embarrassed by Pittsburgh earlier this year. Great for the city, and it looks like the stadium was packed. Fans get a game ball this week as they also caused a game changing false start on Oakland in their last drive. More on that later.

8. This game was a classic game of momentum shifts. When the game started, the KC defense gets a three and out, then Hill muffs a punt that sets the Raiders up. Defense stiffens, only gives up three. Hill gets redemption by catching a beautiful TD pass and then breaking an even prettier punt return for another TD and a 21-3 lead. Then KC decided to go into a shell and stop scoring, and the defense had to win the game. Again, more on that later.

7. Neither Alex Smith or Derek Carr had what you could call a good game. Let’s talk about Alex first. Alex had one good quarter, the second quarter. He was awful in the third quarter. In the third quarter he threw a pick on his second pass, which turned the game momentum; defense holds and give up only three. On the next drive Alex fumbles; defense holds and Oakland punter King can’t get the ball placed so the Raiders lose a chip shot field goal attempt. Then in the third possession, Smith can’t get the plays called and takes a delay of game, killing the next drive. On a positive for Alex, he threw for 264 yards, averaged over ten yards a completion and had passes to Conley, Maclin and Kelce that were over 15 yards. Alex was only sacked once. He ran for a big first down in the fourth quarter. Biggest plus for Alex is he is now 9-1 in his career vs. Oakland. But he could not drive the team to score after the second quarter, and he got no points from the defense this week. The KC defense holding Oakland to two field goals was the difference. Oakland having to drive to score eight to tie at the end instead of five to win -if they would’ve converted the muffed field goal- was also huuuuge. Changed the entire complexion of the final five minutes.

6. Carr is still a puppy, and this is the first really big game under a bright national spotlight that he’s played in. His stats were terrible. 17 for 41 for 117 yards. That’s under three yards per completion. He was sacked once and had a QB rating of 49.1. Murray offset his crappy passing night by running for 103 yards, over 4.5 per carry. He got the only Oakland TD right at the end of the half on a drive sustained by a dubious DPI. Carr certainly didn’t look like a league MVP QB tonight. He missed lots of open receivers and generally looked rattled by the pass rush and the weather.

5. Kelce had 101 yards. He’s only the third tight end to have four 100 yard games in a row, the other two being Tony Gonzalez as a Chief, and Graham in New Orleans. Most of Kelce's yards are on YAC. Tyreek Hill tied the all time Chiefs rookie record for TD receptions with Chris Burford and Stephone Paige. West contributed with the only rushing TD. Ware did not have a great game until the very last carry. He only had 56 yards on 20 carries, averaging less than three yards a carry. But he made the final first down to ice the game by an eyelash on a tough never give up run. Like last week against Atlanta, it allowed the offense to kneel on the ball and kill off the clock.

4. Special teams was mixed. Hill’s fumble out of the gate hurt. His electric TD later made amends. Too many other punt returns that Hill made were called back for holding or block in the back penalties. That had a lot to do with the offense sputtering in the second half. Unsung hero on specials was Colquitt. He punted five times and all five punts pinned Oakland inside the 20 to give them a long field. This was perhaps the key to the win that most folks don’t consider.

3. DJ’s injury is a ruptured achillies. He’s done for the year. He went down without any contact, which is exactly what happened to him when he blew out his achillies against Tennessee a couple years ago. This one could be a career-ender. Hope not, but it sure didn’t look good. The Roach-Hyphen came out for back spasms, and with Howard and Bailey being out for the year, KC is getting very lean on the D-Line. DJ’s injury could be as critical to KC long term fortunes as Gronk’s is to New England. DJ is the QB of our defense. He’s a run stopper. Wilson had some moments, but he dropped a pick, and got ran over by Murray several times in the second half. Peters played another great game, although he got torched bad in the fourth quarter by Cooper and Carr overthrew him. Nelson played well and got called for a very dubious DPI that made Andy blow his stack. And who the HELL is Terrance Mitchell? I don’t know but he had five tackles and the biggest pass defense of the game.

2. Raiders were the Raiders, killing themselves with 82 yards in penalties. My two favorites: When Hill ran the punt back, he lost his mouth guard on around the five yard line. King, the Raider punter who got juked out of his jock, picked it up, took it into the end zone and threw it at Hill for a taunting penalty. How Raiders stupid is that? But the best one was a false start inside two minutes to make a fourth and one a fourth and six. Raiders tried to burn Peters on third and one from the 14; Peters got his hand on the ball to flick it away. So on 4th and one, Chris Jones and a rabid crowd forces an Oakland lineman -the most expensive offensive line in the NFL- to jump off sides and make it 4th and six. They pick on Mitchell, who flicks the pass away beautifully. Chiefs get the ball on their own 19 with just under two minutes left, and kill the clock. Game ball to the crowd for hanging in there in the cold, and helping the defense by turning fourth and one to fourth and six. That could mean an eventual AFC West Championship.

1. So we get a few extra days to rest, but the rest of the season is not easy by any stretch. Tennessee is a game we cannot overlook. They’re also in a division battle and they came in here even before they had Mariota a couple years ago on opening day and kicked our ass. Denver would love to ruin our Christmas, and Phyllis would love to ruin our New Years. The Chiefs can control their own destiny the rest of the way. But if we’re going to do anything special this year, we’ve got to have more production from the offense, and we’ll have to find a way to soldier on without DJ. In any case, it was great to sweep those Greasy Raiders and send them home with a road loss. I hope they have to change planes in Dallas on the way home tonight!

I agree that once again you can fault Alex's play but lets not mention that it was extremely tough to throw with the temp being so cold.

Or that Maclin is just not there right now, which is understandable just coming back from injury - that Int is on Alex but Maclin just let that db jump that route and on another throw to him that was on target, he made almost no effort for the ball, instead just threw up his arms wanting a PI.

Also, you give no credence to the offense making enough plays on offense, even in the second half to switch field position, which was a huge deal with our D playing so well.

Lastly, we had no running game again so there was no play action and the Raiders could play the pass and not worry about the rush in the second half. This is a major concern in the playoffs as weather will be a factor for sure and we must be able to run better than we are trending right now.

Its a team win as most are but to win with the turnover differential of -3 is a huge deal for this team.

Hats off to Terrance Mitchell. What a good game. I hope fans give him a break, he's inexperienced and going to make mistakes.

The other really cool thing about the game last night was that KC was also able to overcome some sketchy officiating.

I thought the non-fumble early in the game and the PI call later were both pretty bad.

They were, but they weren't nearly as catastrophic as all the crap no holding calls and ridiculous PI calls that Donk game provided. Maybe it is because Faid was so ineffective and all those led to Donk plays, but FUUU*******

**** Donk Forever.

Excellent write up!!

I hate the Faders, maybe not quit as much as the arrogant Cheating Donks, but I really hate these guys. One close up shot of a Fader fan after their only TD, reminded me why. He was screaming in the face of two Chiefs fans. They must have been his friends because they did not punch him in the mouth like he deserved. Two decades of being a season ticket holder and it was always the same. Fader fans are mouthy, dress in gay Gothic costumes, instigate more fights and get arrested more than Any fans to come into Arrowhead. It was so awesome to watch them sit out there in sub-freezing weather while their team is gifted field position and turnovers all night, only to come away with 13 total points. Pitiful. A heart-wrenching loss, and they looked bad doing it.

It was amazing to be only the second team (Panthers) in 40 plus years to have a turnover ratio of (-minus 3) and still beat these assholes. From their soup-bowl haircut dork owner, to their mouthy, classless, D-bag head coach, their convict fans and shit-hole city-this was a crushing defeat. 1st seed down to 5th- 1st place down to 2nd, Possibly Bye down to Wildcard, a Split down to a Sweep and another Huge win for the good guys. Being swept by the Chiefs has to be the worst for them-and that makes the win all that much better.

I really hope we beat their loser asses again in the Playoffs. It will be great to finish them off for the season. A trifecta of penalties, pouting and crushing defeats to remind them why they spent decades with losing records year after year. And best of all, make their pos fans put away their black pantyhose, make up and wizard capes for another year.

I've seen people suggest that had some impact, but I don't buy it. If it had hit the wire, the play should have been stopped, and I didn't see a single player on the field pleading the case to the refs.

Just a couple of things....

1. Props to Fisher. Outside of that strip sack....he did a damn fine job of stopping Mack.

2. Where was Hali last night? I don't remember seeing him much or hearing his name. Wonder if the cold had anything to do with that.

3. Where were the sweeps from Hill?
