We have always had a top ten payroll. Our issue is we have no wiggle room when signing these new $200 contracts every good player is getting these days. We whiff, it hurts us in the long term.

Only if your billionaire owner that's been reaping record profits year after year after year allows it to hurt you long term.

The dude was a 2nd generation baseball owner when he bought the team (the 4th team he's owned, FYI). He sold the parking structures for what the team cost, so he got the Cardinals for free. He has been a hugely successful hedge fund manager for years (though I think he's largely out of it now, he has a ton of other business interests with Mercer Reynolds). Oh yeah, and he's about 18 months away from a massive television windfall.

Bill DeWitt if ****ing loaded and he's playing with house money. There's no reason at all why he couldn't pony up, take a swing and if it misses - friggen eat it and move along.

Cardinals fans need to stop worrying about Bill DeWitt Jrs great great great great grandchildren and hold him accountable for the fact that he has consistently turned yellow when required to pay market prices for big-ticket players. It works out when the rest of your division is full of also-rans and you have a pile of cost-controlled talent to draw from. But when your division is arguably the toughest in baseball and the farm has thinned out - spend the goddamn money.

Whitey said it decades ago and it's more true now than it has ever been - it's the high price of mediocrity that kills in this game. Spending $16 million/season on Leake is a joke when Zimmermann was there for 22. Or when the true value of the Scherzer deal was a whopping $17 million/season when adjusted for inflation (and yet another time the Cardinals claimed to have come in second place).

I'm sick and tired of the Cardinals crying poor. The problem is that if DeWitt sells, the group that buys it will have debt service to deal with that will hammer their financial wherewithal.

DeWitt's in a perfect position to simply spend what he needs to spend to win - he just won't do it.

The Cubs extended an agreement with WGN in 2015 that spans through 2019 for an undisclosed amount. In 2014 the Cubs earned $60 million from broadcasting rights. They aren't breaking the bank right now. However, in 2020 the Ricketts are looking to follow the Dodgers and create their own cable network.

I would say a safe estimate for what they are bringing in is like 20% of what the Dodgers are bringing in.

Well at the risk of just repeating myself, hitters don't change.

He was hot. He wasn't going to stay that way. When he was hot, he recognized everything and not just sliders. Guys have stretches like that; they don't make sense but they happen. They don't last.

Serious question here - is that the worst defensive outfield to ever start a major league baseball game? Like...ever? Could there conceivably be a worse one?

Piscotty is a good fielder with a good arm. Out of position in CF but still, there has to be worse.
