Brett Veach prioritizing re-signing Chris Jones, L'Jarius Sneed

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said he is aware of the challenge the organization faces in re-signing both defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed but said it would be an offseason priority to get both players under new contracts.

"Sometimes I look at our situation and I'm like, 'I don't know how we're going to do this,' but we usually work through things systematically and have a list of the priorities,'' Veach said as the Chiefs continued preparations for Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. "Certainly, Chris and LJ are at the top of the list.

"It's extremely hard because you have two keystone players there.''

Jones, 29, has been one of the NFL's top pass-rushers for years. He had 10.5 sacks this season to tie for the team lead after missing training camp and the first regular-season game while holding out for a new contract.

He didn't get the extension he was looking for, but the Chiefs sweetened the final season of his existing contract.

"It was important for us to mend the fences with Chris because we love him and he's an iconic player here, not just here, but I mean of all time,'' Veach said. "That was important for us, and we'll continue to work hard and see if we can get something done, but it will be a priority for us.''

The Chiefs used Sneed, 27, this season to defend against the opponent's top receiver much of the time, and none had big games against him.

Jones and Sneed are key players for an improved Chiefs defense that allowed fewer points than all but one other team during the regular season and held the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to 41 total points in the playoffs.

The Chiefs had defenses that were at times competitive since Patrick Mahomes became their starting quarterback in 2018, but rarely were they consistently so. Veach and the Chiefs found the task of building a top defense difficult because the past few seasons they were carrying Mahomes' massive contract.

"I still remember in '17 and '18 just saying if we can just get them to punt just once we've got a shot,'' Veach said. "Now all of a sudden it's like all we've got to do is just score once and we're good.

"Going from where we were in '17 and '18 to having one of the best defenses, knowing the constraints we had of just paying [Mahomes] and probably drafting later [in rounds], I don't think I ever envisioned having a top one or two defense.''

The Rams offered some ridiculous package for Brian Burns a few years back.

Pass Rushers seem to bring major offers.

Chiefs started their new formula with Tyreek and now it’s happening with Sneed where they are never going to have to overpay home grown talent because they can let these guys go see what their value is, report back to the team what offers they’re getting, then determine if they’re worth that price or not.

George to me right now is on the same trajectory as Sneed. You will tag him and possibly trade if his market value is too high. McDuffie will get paid before that happens at his current trajectory. They have that fifth year option as leverage over both.

It’s very Patriot esque. But being part of this organization is an honor and privilege these days and there’s a price to pay for that.

Someday I would like to see us roll the dice by trading someone for a future first round pick.

That’s the only way we’ll be drafting really high. It’d be nice to trade Karlaftis (when the time is right) for the other team’s first in the following draft.

If that team craters, we might see a top 5 pick.

Obviously those are top 5 guys. But George is on a ridiculous pace at 22 years old. He has a crazy work ethic, and should only improve.

I don’t think projecting him to get a 4 year deal for 140 3 years after Bosa’s is that crazy of a prediction. And honestly it will probably be higher considering how fast the cap is rising

It’s getting done

The race to retain Jones began this week. The Chiefs hope to do just that before 11 a.m. CT on March 11 when agents of unrestricted free agents can enter contract negotiations with any interested team. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach acknowledged Tuesday that re-signing Jones is the team’s top priority. By Thursday afternoon — when several members of the organization flew home to Kansas City — there was “growing optimism,” according to league sources, that the Chiefs will agree to a new contract with Jones before free agency.

“I love Chris,” Veach said Tuesday of Jones. “We tried really hard to get something done (last year) and we didn’t. But when we got together right after that Detroit game (in early September), we had a great talk.

“Both parties, I think, want to be here, so we’ll get to work. That’s certainly a guy we want back and love and want to see him finish his career here in Kansas City.”

But the Chiefs could tag and trade Sneed for 2024 pick ahead of the draft. In 2019, the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on outside linebacker Dee Ford, then traded him to the 49ers for a second-round pick. If the Chiefs enter into advanced trade discussions for Sneed, they would seek at least a second-round pick. Since Tuesday, six teams have shown interest in acquiring Sneed, according to a league source.

I think Arizona is a sneaky landing spot for LJ.

They have the most draft picks and plenty of cap space to pay him what he’s going to want on top of it.

I wonder if you could get 35 + 105 or 66 + 71 from them. They have the money to break him off and they need culture setters.

They won't. They weren't consistent this year and he's a year older.

If we retain Jones, he won't be 'worth' what we're paying him. That's just the reality of 3rd contract guys. The money gets larger and the player gets worse. It's just a question of how long they can stay viable and whether or not that money could've done more for us if used in some other fashion.

It's not a slam-dunk either way. A Chris Jones contract could fairly easily go bad for us. But if that's the direction we go, it's hard to say it's a 'bad' idea.

All depends on the structure and when we can get out. If it’s a 3 year deal with a way out in year 3, do it.

Oh it won't even be that difficult for a season or maybe 2 if they do a 5 year deal that's really only 3 years.

But I'd be surprised if Veach wasn't trying that very thing last season and getting stonewalled.

It's just hard to look at these negotiations without considering how they went last time. And the fact that the Katz brothers are mouth-breathing window-lickers.

At this point the Chiefs just don't have the leverage to really lean into some of the things I'd think they should've been able to accomplish last season. Best shot they have is Mahomes/Kelce convincing Jones to take command of the discussions and get the deal over the line.
