SACRAMENTO — Sources confirm that the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department is working a significant break in the search for the East Area Rapist.

A possible arrest in the decadeslong case may have been made. The department said it hopes to release further information Wednesday.

Police believe the East Area Rapist or Golden State Killer was responsible for 12 homicides, almost 50 rapes and 120 home burglaries that spanned a decade starting in the late 1970s in Sacramento County.

“It is the most prolific unsolved serial killing case probably in modern history,” said Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert.

FOX40’s own “Exposed: East Area Rapist” podcast covered the cold case through interviews with victims, their families and the original investigators.

Like some of you here on CP, I really get into the "whodunnits". I recently learned of this serial killer and have been fascinated that he has not been caught. More than likely he probably recently slipped up and his DNA was taken and because they already have his DNA from his past crimes they now have a legit hit on his DNA.

There are two unsolved rape/murders in Granite Bay in the early 90's. His daughter lived there at the time. It's possible that was him.

His last few known attacks, he had several of his victims get free and fight back. He was also almost caught several times and just barely escaped. He may have "retired" in fear that he was getting too old and would get caught or killed soon. It would be pretty unusual, though, to have someone with those kind of compulsions just be able to turn them off.
