If Royals stand pat, you role with Duffy, Vargas and Kennedy and play the hot hand with Karns/Hammel. With our current rotation, we'd have to use Minor in an Andrew Miller 'fireman' bullpen role (2 innings a lot of games) with Soria and Herrera as the only other 2 relievers I really trust (Alexander is growing on me).
Truth be told, we definitely need a Cueto if we truly want to compete for playoffs/World Series. I like our team offensively just fine. I think Soler will end up adding a ton of value from the DH (or RF) spot. I think Boni is about ready to hit a HUGE drought. Boni is a AAAA guy if I've ever seen one. Soler has star potential. His bat is explosive. I'm really hoping it clicks with him sooner rather than later, his bat would be a huge addition to this lineup. Really hope Gordon wakes up, too. Seeing some life, but he still doesn't look like the guy from pre-groin tear. |

It's like starting a new job. No one ever wants to leave what they're comfortable with and dive into something new. If the Royals make competitive offers to Hos, Moose and LoCain, they can keep all 3 (or 2 of 3). In fact, a guy like Hos might get his best offer from KC (although he's a lot higher regarded than most of you think, as shown in the WBC when Leyland played him over Goldschmidt). And, WAR is still a joke when it comes to Hosmer, because however they are grading him on the defensive scale is a total sham and makes no sense. I've watched baseball my whole life, and his defense at 1st base is absolutely elite. The advanced metrics on 1st base defense are total garbage.

Guys like Smoak and Alonso coming from nowhere might even make Hosmer a lot cheaper, too. You might be able to get Hos for 5/85 or something. Moose, however, playing a premium position and playing it above average, is going to get at least 6/150, especially if he hits 40+ dongs

Cain probably ends up getting overpaid by someone because he plays a premium position, does so in elite fashion, runs the bases extremely well, hits to all fields, has some pop, and is the perfect 'final piece' for a contender for the next 2 years (and he'll probably get 4 years because of it). He is a better player than Dexter Fowler and he'll be paid accordingly.

The only hope with Moose is that power has become less expensive than it used to be. Look at the all the sluggers who got left out in FA. That's how we got Moss.
Even Trumbo, he hit 47 HR last year and only got a $37 million contract. That would've been absurd 5 years ago. Moose will obviously get much more than that because of his age/defense, but maybe he won't cost $25 million a year. |

Ha. Ha.
I like Esky, but the Royals are 100% going to role with Mondesi as the 'new Esky' next year. And he'll sink or swim. They'll give him every bit of leash Esky has gotten this year. Hopefully he'll play like he's been playing at AAA next year. I hope they don't hit him 9th and toy with him bunting every time like they did this year. |
