*** Official Formula One 2015 Season Thread ***

I realize that many Americans aren't Formula One fans, but I'm hoping that this thread will generate some new interest in this wonderful formula of racing. We've had a United States Grand Prix off and on over the years, but the USGP now has a (hopefully) permanent home at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

Here's a primer on the formula:

The FIA Formula One World Championship (also Formula One, or F1) is the highest class of single-seat auto racing that is sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors. The racing drivers, constructor teams, track officials, organisers, and circuits are required to be holders of valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing licence issued by the FIA.

Formula One cars are the fastest road course racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 360 km/h (220 mph) with engines currently limited in performance to a maximum of 15,000 RPM. The cars are capable of lateral acceleration in excess of five g in corners. The performance of the cars is very dependent on electronics – although traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008 – and on aerodynamics, suspension and tyres. The formula has radically evolved and changed through the history of the sport.

And, here's the schedule for the 2015 season:

The following twenty Grands Prix are currently scheduled to take place in 2015.

Round Grand Prix Circuit Date

1 Australian Grand Prix Australia Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, Melbourne 15 March
2 Malaysian Grand Prix Malaysia Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur 29 March

Yeah, great for Nico. Lewis handled it pretty well, though.

I was at Indy yesterday. 37 lead changes. I read that Monaco had....1

I cannot understand how people can watch races like that. F1 is brutal.

It certainly has it's challenges, but I sure think some very long straightaways could help fix some of what ails it. But how do you do that on most of its current courses??? Oh well, there's NASCAR!

What did fans do for 2 hrs? Only one lead change that whole time? I'd ask for my $ back honestly. Road races tend to suck from that perspective, it's all about qualifying. F1 races are great insomnia cures

What is the benefit of having 37 lead changes in a race? How many happened via racing and how many happened because of pit stops?

As to there only being one at Monaco, that is due to the nature of the track. It's virtually impossible to pass there.

Versus 1? This cannot be a serious question.

Nearly all on track, but even if they were all via pits its way better than 1 lead change in 2 hrs.

then why watch?

Yes, it is. I presume that you are one of those who complains about lack of scoring in soccer, too?

Understood.

I honestly didn't watch Monaco very closely, because it's not a GP that I enjoy very much. Formula One is very different than Indy. The cars in particular. Of course you are going to have many lead changes when the cars are virtually identical.

Indy definitely restricts car differences....however, road races by nature do lend themselves to disallowing passes.

There will always be more passing (and lead changes) with Indy cars. If you watch other Grand Prix that don't take place in stupid locations like Monaco, you'll see plenty of overtaking. Belgium and USA come to mind. And Canada, which is the next GP.

You don't watch much road racing do you?

DTM, WEC, and F1 have plenty of passing on circuits that permit it.

Monaco would never be approved as a race today if it didn't have the history. It's too narrow and lacks a lot of the required safety equipment and run off space that modern circuits have.
