Andy Reid's football team

One of the most disturbing aspects of yesterday's series of disturbing events, to me, is that we now have Reid effectively running the team himself.

The word is that they will hire a GM, but Reid is clearly above the GM - past and future - in the pecking order. When the line was drawn, Hunt chose Reid.

To me this is never going to work.

CHunt has created a scheme where the head coach reports directly to the owner which undermines the role of the GM, fundamentally. Reid seems to clearly have been chosen over Dorsey after the relationship deteriorated and now in the search for the GM itself, we can expect that Reid will be a primary decision maker in who is hired, which subjugates the GM even further. Will it do the team good to have a yes-man at GM?

So now, what is going to be the practical difference between Reid's power play and his position in Philadelphia where he controlled everything?

Are we happy that Reid will be without Dorsey's moderating influence in the future?

Does this mean that Reid wanted Mahomes but not Dorsey, and that was a factor in the split? Should it comfort us, with Reid's history of drafting, developing, and selecting free agent QBs, including his hand-picked incumbent starter, Alex Smith?

I think everyone's alarm should be up right now. The Hunt family has a history of being too loyal to guys who weren't good enough in the past, and now Reid has basically been given the keys to the franchise. A guy who can't effectively run three time outs and two challenges.

This didn't end well in Philadelphia and, barring Mahomes becoming elite and being able to turn this goat **** into gasoline, I don't think this is going to end well either.

His system, when executed well and when turnovers are limited, is very good at beating bad and mediocre teams, and thus produces a lot of regular season wins because those are 2/3 of the teams you play in a given year.

In the postseason you don't play many mediocre teams, which is probably why he has a losing record in the postseason.

Once in a while a Brian Hoyer quarterbacked Texans team backs into the playoffs, but other than that, Reid doesn't win consistently in the postseason, despite often getting there.
All you can do is hope that the defense and special teams grow in to and maintains an elite playing level while a legitimate QB breathes life in to that thing Reid calls an offense.

Exactly, it must get tiring for the D. when they get a big turnover, only to watch the offense sputter to a 3 and out....and then right back on the field.

A Top 5 Offense led by 2 PM complimented by strong special teams and this great D.

Andy has the ability to put clown shoes on every team/coach in the NFL, even Billichick.. He is a hell of a coach, but has been held back by a couple of fatal flaws.

One, time management. It's been on full display time and time again.

Second, QB, which isn't entirely his fault. Give him Brady, Rape, Manning, etc. and Andy has multiple SB titles.

He can fix one of his problems, which is reeruningly easy to fix, but probably won't.

The other is nearly impossible to fix, and before everyone goes Mahomes crazy, remember that the odds are against us. I am happy that Mahomes is here, though, because is shows a dramatic change in approach.

You can also hope that the next generation of Hunt family children grow up to develop a severe case of disinterest in professional football while acquiring millions in debt that will need to be paid off quickly...

Andy will probably never be good at clock management at this point, but solving the other problem (QB) could to a degree solve both problems.

You just cant combine Andys time management issues with a play it safe game manager. That just compounds the problem as illustrated on the last scoring drive of that Pats playoff game.

Sorry, but if Andy wanted to keep Dorsey he would still be here. Coaches with credentials can tell the owner what they want to stay and shit gets done. There are about 25 teams happy to meet his demands.

Yes 100% agree. Especially given the announcement of the two decisions the same day. Was intentional no doubt.

The coach should be able to tell the GM who he wants and what direction the team goes. The GM's job is to facilitate that. That's pretty much how every functional team works. When it isn't that way it's a Scott Pioli or Carl Peterson (post Marty) type situation.

Dorsey was able to do that to an extent but he sucked so bad at the business side of being the GM that it started to affect his primary role of building the team with the HC's needs.

And for the record, Reid was a damn good coach/gm combo in philly. His last two seasons, according to some philly newspaper guy, he wasn't the GM. That's why the mass buying of FA's those two years were completely out of character.
buttt...
REID DOESN'T WANT TO BE THE GM. Veach is the likely replacement and is very well respected as a potential GM in the league. He may be Reid's guy, but he may be the right guy.

FOR THE REAL RECORD

Andy was the executive vice president of football operations in Philly from 2001 to 2012, until the very end of his tenure there.

That means, he WAS THE GMs BOSS, the GM in Philly reported to him. Basically making him the GM, he had final say. The GM in Philly was his puppet for 12 years in Philly.

That's the biggest fear people have here, him getting too much control and just getting a yes man in the GM role with no checks and balance.

It's really the only downfall of Andy's. He needs to just stick to coaching.

Howie Roseman became their GM in 2010 and according to the sports writer from Philly, wrestled control of personnel from Reid. Im sure if you do a little research, you will find what I said was true.
