How would YOU try to improve the defense?

Amid all the hysteria over our two wins and offensive performances, I'm just wondering what can realistically be done to improve the defense? Now we know Berry will hopefully be returning soon which should be massive, but with the way this offense is looking, just a slight improvement on defense could take us to the promise land yall. So does Veach sit, be patient and hope Berry is enough to improve things? Should he get on the phone and beg Breeland to join the kingdom? Or should he seek to make a trade of some sort?

I think I'd probably go with trying to get Breeland in and with Berry added to the mix I think the unit would be vastly improved.

...Breeland...Berry...Parker...Fuller...

With Nelson In the slot. Surely that would be enough?

I respect you htismaqe, we have similar opinions for the most part so I'm just trying to open up some discussion. No flaming from me.

So all this week if you were the OC of the 49er's... how are you going to game plan against Bob Sutton?

You know CB's are going to play off the ball 12 yards.
You know the majority of the time you are going to see only 3 pass rushers.
You don't have to worry about the blitz that much, and if it comes you rid of the ball quick to your WR's who can take advantage of a 12 yard pad.
etc...

The Chargers and Steelers have given exposure, Bob needs to do something different next week just for the sake of it.

or not? Just go with status quo because Mahomes is bringing us the Wins?

The 49ers can't do the things that the Steelers and Chargers just did because they don't have the weapons. Who's going to burn us? Pierre Garcon? They have one weapon that I'm worried about and that's George Kittle. If Berry is back and healthy....then good luck throwing to Kittle all day.

You get up big on two Hall of Fame QBs. They have to go all out pass mode which forces more defense backs on the field. Your pass rush has to come from 3 man front, which knocks down the pass rush. Then with playing two Hall of Fame QBs, you have QBs that can make plays and eat up a bunch of yardage.

We have too many Marty era and Alex Smith era onlookers thinking we need to have as low scoring as possible.

The defense is allowed to be far from perfect, but if you don't think there is room for improvement you are delusional.

Lets do this:
Take yourself back 2 years and say this:

I really think getting Eric Murray off the field and Eric Avery back on will do wonders.

The majority of our big plays are given up by Murray.

It really doesn't have anything to do with Mahomes (otherwise we wouldn't have seen it so often even with Alex Smith at the helm). It's all about limiting the damage. It worked week 1 against the Chargers (12 points after 3 quarters) and would have worked much better against the Steelers yesterday had the fumble-turned-TD not been reversed.

They just don't have the horses to do much else. There's way too little talent on the field.

There's plenty of room for improvement but he's partially right, you know.

Way too many people have the NFL backwards, because the Chiefs have been backwards for the majority of their lives.

This is the dawning of a new day and while the defense could certainly improve, the days of the defense having to carry this team are over.

The problem is that very few people think that.

The majority of Chiefs kingdom pines for the days of Marty, nearly half of which occurred before the advent of modern Free Agency.

Can anyone explain to me how that defense was getting interceptions in training camp and looked like it was standing its ground against our offense some days?

I still think this is an average defense but I have come to realize that high-powered offense will put more pressure on the defense and make it allow more points.

It may sound silly but if Alex Smith was playing instead of Mahomes yesterday, I am sure we would have lost the game but I feel like the defense would have allowed less yard and less points.

Do you think a fault of Reid/Sutton is going into the Prevent too early at times?

So what’s going on here? Are we just chilling in prevent all game, or wtf?

I think we should mix in drives where we are hyper aggressive with blitzing and anticipating the hot route dump offs pretty regularly.

If we get beat on one or two, so what? They can’t keep pace with our offense. In some games, perhaps all we’ll need is one additional drive granted to us via turnover. Let’s snag that bitch early with some nasty blitzes.

Maybe. I think they play scared a lot of the time. Which I can understand, if those 11 guys were my defense, I'd be freaking scared too. LOL

And this is perhaps a terrible idea, but what if we put Hill in for random obvious passing downs and let him chase these statue QB’s?

If they freak out pre-snap they may just call a timeout, and if so, even that’s a win.

What happens when Mahomes finally makes a mistake (and you know he will)? The defense is going to have to get better but giving up big plays isn't going to accomplish that.
