Minor change in philosophy
Back when I joined ChiefsPlanet, new users could pretty much register, confirm their email address, and immediately start posting. That meant that we often got a lot of n00bs during game weeks from opposing fans, for example, because they wanted to jump in and talk about the game.
At some point maybe 3-5 years ago, a change was made in an attempt to keep out recently-banned users and porn spammers that required every new user to be manually approved by a mod before they'd be allowed to post. In concept, this makes a lot of sense. In reality, though, it resulted in large delays between registration and being able to post that ranged from a few hours to more than a week (depending on how often the mods checked the queue and went through everyone). As an experiment, starting today we're going back to the old approach. It may not last, but we want to see if we see an uptick in n00b participation. Hopefully it's a change for the better, but we'll see. Related to that, though, the mods won't be able to keep the "bad guys" from getting into the Planet in the first place, so please use the report function to report anything we should take a close look at. In addition, if you have infraction powers and someone starts spamming porn all over the place, feel free to infract the hell out of them until the mods can get in and take care of it. No promises it'll stay this way, but we figured we'd give it a try. |

This place is slowing down and changes need to be made. Even if this idea doesn't work, I like the progressiveness. I can't remember the last time I saw a legitimate n00b around here.

I guess Hootie is still making ChiefsPlanet Great Again even behind the scenes.

I think that's fine, so long as they don't instantly get thread-starting privileges. Perhaps you can limit their ability to attach files or post links as well (for the pRon reasons)

Yep, that's already in place. I think you need something like 100 posts + positive rep or something like that to get access to thread starting and image posting.

I like it. I've been lurking here for years, but only post when I wish to chime in. I just enjoy getting other Chiefs fans perspectives. However, the few times I wished to post something or attach a pic, I was not able. Hopefully I will have full access, should the need arise. I will not however, be spamming with unnecessary B.S.

Is there a way to limit the number of posts that they can start with? At least until they get approved.

For the last few years, people have wondered ... why is CP dying? Well, it's because the hall of fame great moderator kPhobia put up a HUGE restriction on any new user registering and being able to post because of that rascal you all called Hootie! So now, for about 4 years, the only new users CP has gotten have been mults of accounts who are patient enough to wait a week to be approved to post (since true n00bs immediately lose interest when they can't post for the reason they are signing up in the first place). So not only was kPhobia a TREMENDOUS moderator and community member, he also, on his way out, was directly responsible for pretty much killing traffic on the board. Just tremendous work by kPhobia! But at least you kept those terrorists like ROR, Black Bob, Hootie and Clay from re-registering! Oh wait, I guess you only kept 1 of those terrorists away. Yikes! |
