Jaylon Smith blown-out knee at NFL Combine
http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/n...rt-year-022616
Docs finally get good look at Notre Dame star LB's blown-out knee at NFL Combine By Alex Marvez @alexmarvez Feb 26, 2016 at 3:13p ET Although he isn't participating in any drills, Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith's visit to the NFL Scouting Combine was an important one. Smith's left knee was examined Friday by team physicians to determine the extent of the injury sustained in Notre Dame's bowl game against Ohio State. Smith suffered multiple torn ligaments and possible nerve damage that could greatly damage the stock of a player who was considered a first-round lock in April's draft. A source told FOXSports.com that Smith was walking at the combine wearing a DonJoy A22 brace roughly seven weeks after surgery. "He looks good," the source said. "He just needs more time." How much time is a matter of speculation that NFL teams must try to answer before deciding where to place him on their draft boards -- because nerve damage is more serious than torn ligaments. Dr. David Chao, who was the long-time team physician for the San Diego Chargers, told co-host Bruce Murray and me on SiriusXM NFL Radio Friday that he believes Smith will need a "redshirt year" in 2016 before returning to play. Chao based some of his analysis upon watching a video Smith posted of his recovery. Chao believes Smith was wearing an AFO (ankle-foot orthosis) brace that would indicate drop foot (also known as foot drop), a nerve ailment that prevents people from lifting the front part of their foot. A source told FOXSports.com that two doctors with knowledge of the situation have differing opinions about the odds of Smith making a full recovery, with one far more optimistic than the other. Another doctor was far more pessimistic, listing Smith's odds for a full recovery at 10 percent. The 6-foot-3, 229-pound Smith won the Butkus Award as the NFL's top linebacker in 2015 and led the Fighting Irish in tackles the past two seasons. 2 342 SHARES Alex Marvez NFL Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jaylen Smith |

And with that being said....I would easily draft him in the 5th. Let him recover and see if he gets back to form. If not....then it was just a ****ing 5th round pick. No big deal.

Lattimore severely tore the same ACL twice and actually dislocated and tore every ligament in the knee the 2nd go-around. Chances of peroneal nerve palsy in situations like Lattimore's are extremely high. I'm not entirely sure Smith is an exact same case. Initial reports were that the repairs to the ACL and PCL were very good and that the nerve was "healthy and in great condition." How things went from that to him having peroneal nerve damage that affects both his knee and ankle is something I can't speak for, but it seems relatively odd. It could be a little smoke to go with a not so great prognosis for him playing in 2016, or it could just be that bad. Alot of information being leaked about his injury that normally doesn't get leaked. This all kind of has me a little skeptical and thinking that either the initial report is a complete line of bullshit or the new reports are being skewed for team interests. I recall reading some article where a doctor mentioned Smith wearing a brace commonly used when someone has peroneal nerve palsy after Smith had made a tweet showing himself wearing it about 6 weeks after surgery. It very well could be that this doctor made a correct assumption, and Jaylon Smith will never play football again. There is a small chance that the pressure on the nerve could subside and Smith recovers, but I wouldn't hold my breath. It'll be interesting going forward. I'm not so sure any team drafts him if all of these new reports are true, and if they do it won't be until very, very late.

Being ready physically after two years off will likely take another full year. Being ready for game speed will take a LONG time. This guy won't make it.
