Healthy food substitutes

I'm hoping this thread can help those who are trying to better themselves. Please share some healthy food substitutions if you have any. Thank you.

1. Replace mayo and sour cream with plain Greek yogurt. Use Greek yogurt with your tuna, egg salads and chicken salads.

2. Use cauliflower instead of potatoes when wanting mashed potatoes. Steam the cauliflower and blend with a pinch of salt and pepper. Be careful with the butter. Also cauliflower makes a great pizza crust.

3. Try to use jelly instead of syrup and butter when eating pancakes.

4. Use oatmeal as binder instead of breadcrumbs when making meatloaf, hamburgers, meat balls etc etc.

5. Use unsweetened applesauce for a GREAT substitute for butter. Don't knock it until you've tried it. It has the exact same consistency and texture as butter.

I don't think too much butter is healthy either, is why I use it for certain recipes. I use it as a calorie reducer so a rich dish is less so. Mainly just in everyday mashed potatoes. And/or I also cook them in chicken broth for lower calorie mashed potatoes. So that's a personal judgment call, that it's less healthy. I said I checked the two preservatives from a group that monitors such things in products.

I do think fats are good in the diet even meat fat including cream and butter overall. I think it depends on what kind of diet one follows though in terms of keeping weight off. For instance lots of butter is fine if you're doing a paleo diet but carbs are very restricted. I wouldn't do well on that. I have to have a certain balance of fat, protein and carbs and some vegetarian. So while, I allow some saturated fats, I like to keep them in a certain balance.

I use butter a lot, mostly as ghee.

Coconut oil is good, too.

But if you're worries about such things as you obviously are, why not stick to more natural ingredients? Butter is way more natural than any of that butter substitute crap AND tastes a lot better. If you're cutting calories, use less, it'll still taste better.

Kerry Gold is expensive though. If I could get it in wholesale bulk I'd buy it though.

EDIT: I just checked that Costco carries it but mine doesn't. Still pricy though. Might be a fine purchase for an occasion.

Butter freezes really well, so I wait until the Plugra goes on sale and then stock up.

I do use butter. Where did I say I didn't?

I assure, you my diet is far more natural than most peoples. Much lower on the food chain overall with few processed or packaged foods. Like I said, I have chosen my poisons and use them sparingly to moderately.I've checked out the ingredients on the liquid version and they are not that bad. In fact it is made from what butter is made from in part. I never claimed to be 100% purist on eating naturally or organically. I mean grass fed beef is healthier too but I hate the taste when I tried it. Plus a lot of it is tough. I'll stick to the corn fed. I don't even buy all my produce organic because of price but also because not all produce is easily available. If you guys eat commercially produced corn, and I think most are, an argument could be made about that being even worse.

As to whether this product tastes better—that's a matter of opinion and personal preference. I can't tell the difference at all. I think the name of the product is apt.

You shouldn't freeze food. I've read that the ice crystals change the molecular structure of the food and it can cause cancer after you thaw it.

If you can't taste the difference between the two, you and Coochie Liquor should get together.

I have both of those now. You got me to try ghee but I bought it at the health food store as it was on sale. I'm lazy about making everything from scratch. I do enough as it is.

I have coconut oil, Earth Balance, Spectrum shortening, butter, olive oil, grape seed oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, canola oil a few more in small quantities as it goes bad. And I use the "Can't Believe" for a few dishes ( but not always - like if a holiday meal). I use a variety—not just one. I have cut down on the canola when it came under attack but I do use it for certain things where a large amount is needed as it's cheaper.

In fact I tried finding one of the worst oils for you which was cottonseed oil cause Cafe du Monde and other bakers claim it's the best for beignets. Never found it anywhere. I'd use it for the rare occasions I'd make a beignet which is probably a few times in a lifetime though.
