Healthy food substitutes

I'm hoping this thread can help those who are trying to better themselves. Please share some healthy food substitutions if you have any. Thank you.

1. Replace mayo and sour cream with plain Greek yogurt. Use Greek yogurt with your tuna, egg salads and chicken salads.

2. Use cauliflower instead of potatoes when wanting mashed potatoes. Steam the cauliflower and blend with a pinch of salt and pepper. Be careful with the butter. Also cauliflower makes a great pizza crust.

3. Try to use jelly instead of syrup and butter when eating pancakes.

4. Use oatmeal as binder instead of breadcrumbs when making meatloaf, hamburgers, meat balls etc etc.

5. Use unsweetened applesauce for a GREAT substitute for butter. Don't knock it until you've tried it. It has the exact same consistency and texture as butter.

As long as you are basing it on how you think it makes tea and not on some quack idea of it being unhealthy for you.

Now maybe I'm doing the math wrong, but that looks like more than 6 ingredients to me. You might double check.

Look, I'm not saying everyone needs to go eat organic everything, but butter substitutes are disgusting. Cutting fat will not help you loose weight.
Those aren't on my list and I took it out to read with a magnifying glass. You might we looking at the solid substitute which tastes horrible. I use the liquid and only when blended with butter for cooking in some dishes. Like mashed potatoes.

Well, FMB brought up the water and iirc due to how I mentioned how bad water tastes in it. However, I don't use it otherwise but don't want to get into it again. Been there done that. Besides, it makes meat taste horrible too. I will melt certain things like marshmallows to make fondant in it but not much else. Oh, yeah maybe to heat a rag or something.

4. Microwaves Damage Your Food and Emit Harmful Radiation

Heating your food in a microwave oven is fast and highly convenient.
However, there are people who believe that this convenience comes at a cost.

They claim that microwaves produce harmful radiation and cause damage to healthy nutrients in foods, and that there are studies showing microwaved food to be downright harmful to health.

But when you go through the literature to look for these studies, they are nowhere to be found.

Microwave ovens are actually designed in a way that doesn’t allow the radiation to escape.

Studies also show that they are even better at preserving nutrients than cooking methods like boiling and frying (17, 18, 19).

Some people don’t want to use microwaves, and that’s fine. But there is no evidence that they cause harm, and no scientifically valid argument to avoid them.

Why Microwaving Water for Tea Is a Bad Idea
Apparently there are a lot of things us novice tea makers are doing wrong. A big one is using the microwave to heat up our water

Did you even read the article? It says tea from the microwave tastes bad because the water isn't heated evenly.

Actually, that is just one point they mentioned about it, if you read it. ( <--returning your snarky tone)
I said, I don't care for the taste. That is my preference and opinion and I am sticking to it no matter what you want to argue. I've tried it. I know what I like.

Quote:

It turns out that tea requires certain types of hot water. That is, water at a certain temperature. Green tea, for example, should be steeped at 176º F; herbal tea requires 210º F. When you stick your mug in the microwave, you have no idea how hot your water is. Tea kettles, on the other hand, are designed to heat tea to 212º F, according to Slate....
Quote:
The two do agree though, that the right temperature of water is really important. Overheating your water can make your tea taste bitter and weird, says Slate.

What about the fact that it is less healthy for you that actual butter?

I'm not knowledgeable about the health implications of it. I just know it's gross.

I use a variety of fats. I also use the organic Earth Balance but it has the same calories as butter. It also uses soy but in a blend of palm fruit oil, canola and olive oil. Palm fruit is good for you. None are hydrogenated which you want to avoid. So there's no trans fats. It tastes buttery enough too.

I also use Spectrum's organic all vegetable shortening as a Crisco shortening substitute as it's non-hydrogenated with no trans fats. It works great in baked goods calling for shortening. It's made from mechanically pressed palm oil done in a sustainable manner from an organic company. It's under attack now like soy and canola now though. At least it's not hydrogenated.
