You bring up some really interesting things I need to ponder.

In the meantime...are you familiar with the website Shinguardian? Great tactial analysis. Hard hitting enough that you don't find the depth much anywhere else but funny enough that it is enjoyable and doesn't take itself too seriously. Seems perfect for ya.

This might go down (for Italy) as a classic case of missed opportunities and more importantly a team that refused to play the game within the game that isn't very complex to disguise.
