It's time.

Who should have started the 1986 playoff game vs. the Jets?

Bill Kenney or Todd Blackledge?

Whoever didn't start is the one who should've started.

Obviously.

Here's the box score from that game. I remember it well. Kenney sucked, so they brought Sackledge in, and he threw two picks. Pathetic offensive performance. Lowrey missed the first extra point, and the team gave up 28 unanswered points after that. Truly shitty, pants wetting performance.

Mackovic got fired after this game.

Can you imagine going 10-6, getting your team into the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, and getting whacked?

Yep.

That's exactly what happened.

And then hiring the special teams coach as his replacement. Good ole Frank "Crash" Ganz.

I was happy with the Mackovic pick, pissed they let him go and hired Ganz. So many people who happy about " Ra Ra ST's Ganz " getting the job because he was going to quit and many of the players wanted to revolt.

The Ganz experiment was a " colossal " failure.

My most vivid memory of that season: The Jets started the season 10-1 with Richard Todd as their quarterback, and then they LOST their last 5 games of the year. The Chiefs were such a weak playoff team that they LOST to a team that was on a 5-game losing streak.

The general consensus was that the 1986 Chiefs team won with smoke and mirrors, with the special teams and a few lucky breaks being the main reason the team was able to win 10 games. Mackovic was viewed as a weak coach who was hated by most of his players, and Frank Gansz (the special teams coach) was given most of the credit for the team's success. Gansz basically stabbed Mackovic in the back when he announced that he was resigning from his position with the Chiefs because he wanted to pursue a job as an NFL head coach. Within a weak Mackovic was gone and Gansz had his job.

I also remember that Art Still's dad was a drunk who lived in my neighborhood. He hung out at the local grocery store and told anyone who would listen that Mackovic was a prick who mistreated his son.

Good times.

You remembered well, we did indeed win several games on ST's play and all the credit was with Ganz. Smoke and mirrors is a good way of saying we were short on talent.

But, dead on about Mackovic, he was a prick and wanted to turn over the majority of the roster and even vented his frustrations each year. As much as Steadman was loyal to Hunt, he was to his players and listened to them whine about everything.
