I've never had a homeless person be aggressive towards me. They might come up and ask if you have a smoke/money/whatever and you just say "Nope" and keep trucking forward. It isn't a difficult concept. Sometimes they'll try to keep walking and telling you some sob story and you just don't acknowledge them and they realize they're wasting their time. I don't fear them at all. I just think the majority of the guys asking for cash on the streets are drifters that haven't fallen on hard times and are making an effort to get back on their feet...they're only making an effort to buy a pint and a C rock. I avoid them not from fear, but from an overall frustration with the way they've chosen to live their lives. Is that me basing my view of the majority on the actions of the minority? Yes. But that's what we've become in this country.
