Looks like Dorsey eyeing up a new Mauga. 2-down player.

Hes way better and younger than Mauga but same concept. All these guys besides DJ are way too soft to stop the run and when DJ isnt in there we got no chance. And then throwing Sorenson out there in some packages who is completely useless at stopping the run also, they need a guy like Hodges who can shed guards, throw fullbacks and fill the gaps.

Yes, he prevents returns and is good at avoiding touchbacks (though even that is overstated). But when you put it all together, he's still just a good punter. For tall the 'he pins it in the 20' talk - you guys realize he led the league in touchbacks, right? Johnny Hekker - the genuine #1 in punting, is a legit difference maker and someone worth spending the money on. He has a huge leg AND he never EVER puts it in the end zone. 98 punts, 51 inside the 20....ONE touchback. That's incredible. He was 5 yards better per punt than Dustin Colquitt. Hekker is the kind of punter that you bother spending money on. The rest are just tiny little distinctions in the margins. They're a yard here and there. There's no comparison between Hekker and Colquitt. There's Hekker and then there's everyone else. Let me be clear - I'm not saying that he's way out of bounds with the market. He's a LITTLE overpaid relative to the market, but by only a million or so at most. That's not enough to get in a twist over. I'm simply saying that the market is inefficient as hell when it comes to punters. The Broncos drafted Riley Dixon last year and for their 7th round pick they got production easily on par with Colquitt and likely better. He had more punts for more yards per punt and with fewer touchbacks. He was, at worst, Colquitt's equal. The Chiefs could've drafted Dixon, cut Colquitt and in the process created rollover last year that when combined with the space saved this year would've yielded right at $8 million in extra cap space for the Chiefs. That would've been enough to retain Poe. And if you're not a Poe fan, I'll bet that's enough to get Hightower. The money that the Chiefs are foolishly paying for a luxury item because they're too risk averse to make a smart, calculated play on a market inefficiency is going to cost them an actual starting caliber player on offense or defense. That's a massive mistake.

I think that's underselling Hodges a bit. He's a better run-player than Mauga by a lot and I think he's shown enough growth in coverage to suggest that he'll be a little better than Mauga in that regard as well.
Give me a player that's 20% better than Mauga and I think we're in pretty nice shape there.

So DJ, if cap wasn't an issue, being objective would you rather have Hodges, Brown , Foster or Cunningham?

ILB is cheaper to find on the market than many other positions right now. I like both of those guys a lot but I wonder if you're just pissing away some financial benefits associated with 1st round picks by grabbing an ILB in the first. I think Brown's a little more rangy but I think Hodges is going to be better in run-support. He's a little older but his floor is more established. I think there's actually a chance that Hodges is a better overall player than Brown but then again I think it's more likely that Brown is a genuine starting caliber linebacker. There's definitely more risk with Hodges. But my affinity for Hodges comes from the fact that I think he'd be a cap-friendly addition that would outplay his deal. So it's hard for me to just take the cap out of the equation. Everything in a league with a hard cap comes down to finding surplus value. Even teams who are paying market prices for genuine superstar QBs (the Saints, for instance), struggle to stay at the same level as a team like the Cowboys that is getting good production for cheap from their QB. Brady's as valuable for the cap flexibility his largess provides the Patriots as he is for his actual play on the field. Guys playing above their pay grade is what makes championship teams and I think Hodges can do that.

I really don't know why March-Lillard was so hyped in last years camp. I know we get a training camp warrior every year but when the lights came on he looked completely over matched. Maybe he needed to get used to the speed of the game and then got hurt, but whatever the issue was I have zero faith in his ability to be a full time starter. DJ Alexander has been nails on ST but that's probably his ceiling.
The Chiefs have to do something different if they want to get better, especially between the 20's. |

6 million is enough to sign a couple middle tier free agents.
