He said someone, ie, the photographer in question, was fired over it.

And technically, it was the gym shower in the hotel, not his private shower in his room.

His stated reason for supporting Fred Phelps was that the "world needs to get back to the biblical standards that our God made for us" and upon further questioning he apparently elaborated by indicating he wasn't on board with the "gay and lesbian rights thing". I don't think we should read any more into it than that. There's no indication that he even knows about the Phelps clan's comments about fallen soldiers, for example.
