Revisionist GM: would you have drafted Manual or Geno instead of trading for Smith?

All this 'hate on Alex' talk lately.

Well, what would you have done that would have made us better? Be honest

Posters on this site seriously overrate the damage caused by turnovers. You'd think they cost teams 17 points by the way people lament them.

Sometimes turnovers happen. Force a ball into a tight spot and it might get picked off. It might also extend a drive or lead to a TD. That's different than lobbing a ball into triple coverage.

I have no problem with a QB willing to take risks with the ball. There is a difference between Favre in the 2009 NFCCG and a CB making a great play on a ball down the sideline to take it away from the WR.

Manning had 16 turnovers this year, almost 3x the number that Smith had.

It's not hard to build an offense where you don't turn the ball over and it's especially easy to avoid it when your RB gets you in third and short constantly.

It's not great, but Andrew Luck had 22 turnovers this year. The Colts are still contenders. Why? They score a lot of points. Just like Mark Sanchez.

They had a +5 TO differential the year they won it all, but that includes a 7 turnover game in week 17 that the starters came out of.

But Dick Vermeil always stressed turnovers as maybe the most important stat toward winning. I'm not sure Martz cared. The next two years they were -10 each year. But Martz was never good at things like limiting turnovers or protecting the QB. They also weren't necessarily trying to run Chip Kelly's offense. The 99 Rams finished 23rd out of 31 teams in plays run. They only ran 3 more plays than Dungy's Buccaneers.

What we do know:

Alex Smith's style of play doesn't win shit.

Scoring 30.1 PPG (the Mark Sanchez way, Est. 2014), can win you a lot of games.

This team wouldn't have won 20 games with Geno. They wouldn't have won 9 this year either.

He's not good.

You're way out in left field here. This place has pined for guys like Martz for 15 years. There is no way I'd characterize it as a place where people overvalue turnovers. It's the opposite. The general train of thought is turnovers are okay as long as the QB is throwing it down the field and taking risks.

Peyton Manning has not looked good the 2nd half of the season. Even Hootie agrees with that and he's the ultimate Manning homer. But 16 or 17 turnovers isn't the end of the world. That's probably in line with his normal numbers. You turn it over 25+ times though, that is bad. You are better off with a guy like Alex Smith in a situation like that.

Andrew Luck was mediocre this year, and borderline bad the last month of the season.

I don't think they'll win their 1st round game. They are a bad football team.

People bitch up and down about Jamaal Charles fumbling and they murder QBs for throwing picks on here. Murder them.
