James Shields Hate Thread

What a overpaid bush-league, flash in the pan, choke artist Dickbag McGee this guy is.

EDIT:

But then again, I'm an idiot and should not breed.

I'm almost afraid of extending him a QO for fear that he actually accepts it.

You guys are crazy.

He has the most undeserved nickname in sports since Ruben Patterson called himself "The Kobe Stopper", but there is absolutely no way he accepts a QO or gets less than $90 million. On top of that, he's been your best pitcher for over two years. Two overachieving starts from Guthrie and Vargas certainly don't change that, and Ventura hasn't exactly been a door slammer either.

I tried telling them that, but they won't listen to me.

It's just irrational football fan talk with people treating a baseball game like a football game.

I said it in the game thread, but we would not be in this position without Shields. He was great the 2nd half of the season. So it's kind of a double edged sword. I'm disappointed in how he's pitched in the postseason, but we would not be in this position without him.

Agree with everything except the 90 million. His k/9 the last 3 years looks like this.

8.8
7.7
7.1

That's a bit disturbing for a 33 year old pitcher. I'm still saying 4 -75.

I'm sure there'll be teams scared away just by all the miles on Shields' arm. But someone will probably open the checkbook. He pitches 220+ innings every year. That alone is worth a ton of money. Plus he's obviously been a very good influence on our young pitchers.

I personally love James Shields, but I don't want to see the Royals give a fifth of their salary budget to an aging pitcher who already showed signs of decline much of this season. He was very mediocre early in the year, he stepped up big time in September with two magnificent victories, and then regressed badly this postseason. James Shields is due to go the way of Roy Halladay, and I don't want this to happen in Kansas City where it would crush this team's chances to compete for the next 5 years. It's time to let him go.

You must not have met Artie Moreno or Brian Cashman.

That's not what regression is. He has had three straight bad starts; that's a small sample size issue.

Again, at no point have I said the Royals should resign Shields, as FA pitchers are almost always a rip-off. However, you would be absolutely moronic not to tender him a QO, and I guarantee you he gets at least $90 million from somebody.

You absolutely give him the QO. It's a win-win, regardless of what happens.

You really do love playoff chokers... Fivehead, Shields, let me guess, you like Joe Thornton too?

His ERA, pitch selection and location in the playoffs proves he's a headcase when the games matter most. It's not "irrational football fan talk" for Royals fans to not want him back next year, you have a strong team without him.
