You can't kill somebody just because they kick your door in. You have to be in some sort of life or death situation.

Actually, the second someone enters your house illegally you can drop them. Them being in your house has threatened your life. But, he has to in the house.

If you are in fear of your life or in fear of the life of another person you can legally protect yourself by any reasonable and prudent means. Generally speaking you just can't shoot someone that just walks into your home uninvited. You must have a strong reason to believe that this person is going to do you bodily harm. You can be prosecuted for using "excessive force" for over reacting.

As long as you don't pull some pyscho shit like that old man in Minnesota, you will be fine.

I'll be sure I live to tell the story.

FYP.

Use common sense if you're in a situation like this. Call the cops, hide the family and get yourself a nice weapon (hopefully a gun). Put yourself in a good position to confront the intruder while you're protecting yourself.

If you and your family can make a run for it, then by all means do it and direct the cops. Don't be silly. It could be some drunk kid that got confused. Happens more often then you think. Also, the common rule when owning a gun. Think before you pull that trigger.

Excessive force is not popping someone for being in your house illegally. Walking up and unloading your clip on them after you've dropped them is.

You can pump as many rounds in them as it takes to drop them.

And there's some bullshit with this, too. If I'm going to make the decision to pull the trigger, the dude is going to die. There might be an excess round or two (or four) because this is far from a normal situation. Too much adrenaline and fear fueling the situation.

Yep. If you shoot someone, empty your clip. If you stab someone, stab them several times in different places. If you punch someone, keep punching until they stop fighting back.

People die because they underestimate the ability of a person to take a bullet and keep coming, especially when that person is on drugs.

You have to be smart about it. The simple answer to your sitation is called hollow points. If you drop someone and they are still alive and you pop them until they die you will be going to prison. Don't kid yourself.

That being said I agree that you want to kill them, not hurt them. But you just can't pop extra rounds into them and yes, they have ways to tell if you did that.

I'm not advocating being maniacal about the situation. If someone is down, incapacitated but clearly alive, I'm not going to walk over to kill him. It's going to be up to the ambulance to determine whether he lives or dies.

My point is that the initial onslaught is likely to be more than decisive.

I've pulled several triggers, just not towards someone. If someone is kicking my door in then. You have to react calmly. You can't just go bat shit with the trigger. A few friendly rounds, to try an scare the intruder will do. If you give him a warning or two and doesn't listen, then you pop him one. Keep shooting until the threat is gone. Meaning he's no longer walking towards you. He still could be standing, just not moving. The threat is gone. If he reaches for something then I would shoot until he drops. Basically killing him.
