"Is Having Alex Smith the Worst Purgatory in Football?"--Dan LeBatard

He mentioned it a few times on his radio show today. The quotes in reference is from the top of the second hour. in full:

"What is the worst purgatory in football? Is it Alex Smith, where you're going to be OK, and hugely boring, and never win anything, or is it the whole Philip Rivers situation of always being down late and having to go the whole length of the field?"

"It's not Hell; it's Purgatory. You're OK, but you're not good enough and you're not going to be good enough."

"You're not going to do any sort of meaningful winning with Alex Smith as your QB. Nothing."

"It's hard to watch when you watch what they were playing against and he's, 'all I wanna do is not turn the ball over, all I wanna do is it's 3rd and 9 and I'll throw it three yards, or I'll take a sack.'"

"You'll get to the playoffs, and you'll lose."

I was hoping that the Royals resurgence would help fix the low expectations for the Chiefs. I do think it is helping and the evidence is right around here. Just being average or slightly above average just isn't going to cut it for Chiefs fans after getting a taste of what rooting for a real contender is like in the Royals. Hopefully the perfect storm of injuries/bad luck won't follow the Royals into next year and another contending season will force the Chiefs to finally sack up and really make a run at fielding a contender.

Don't you find it a bit funny that Alex, according to you, has literally had a "bottom tier" offensive line for his entire career?

How many different combinations of offensive linemen and wide receivers has this dude had in front of him in his career?

I think it's becoming apparent that he's the problem.

Alex Smith has only thrown for 6 300 yard games throughout his career. I mean that's not good enough to be considered a heavenly quarterback. So yeah purgatory makes sense.

Oh stop it. KC barely had any drops until they played Pittsburgh. It was raining. MOst drops came when the game was out of reach, but whatever. Don't lie and pretend this has been a season long issue. Alex's piss poor completion percentage throwing beyond 10 yards is a reality bigger than some drops on Sunday.

The defense was terrible. White made a lot of mistakes. The pass rush isn't getting it done. Yes, they've held two opponents so far under 20 points. We lost one of those games because the offense scored 12 points.

Oh FFS, nobody is saying he's the ONLY problem. They're saying he's a prominent problem, and that problem cannot be 'coached up'. He is what he is, and it's purgatory. It doesn't matter if you play a good defense or a bad defense, he's the exact same guy. There is a ceiling you will never reach beyond with Alex Smith. I sure as shit don't think you solve it this season with Nick ****ing Foles, but it's kind of a reality this team needs to honestly accept.

He could stop hurting the team. Contribute less. It's not like Alex isn't one of the people screwing up, and since he touches the ball on every single play, it's pretty important he does that less. He threw an interception to a ****ing ghost in our own territory that was easily turned into a early TD and put us in a huge hole, and you're here making excuses. Weak sauce.

Yeah, you can be glib, but you're doing exactly what you accuse others of. You say they're not spreading blame, but you're giving one guy a ridiculous exclusion from accountability at the most important position the sport has.

Then it was tipped up and intercepted. To top it off, the throw was to pretty much nobody in the first place.

Man, this place sure is a lot more cognizant of reality this week than last. I still don't understand why it took yet another in a long line of pathetic performances for people to finally turn on him. He's always been a POS no matter the record or performance around him.

Have any of the hard-core optimists really changed their tune? I think what you are seeing is the people who have been frustrated, but don't rehash this stuff daily, finally reaching a boiling point.

The Chiefs passing offensive has been one of the worst in the league ever since Alex became a member of the Chiefs and people talk about him as if he's about to crack into the top 10 of QBs in the league. It's disgusting.

I'll give Alex Smith this. He did an excellent job getting mediocre production from a bad supporting cast. The problem is, we're getting more mediocre if not worse production with an excellent supporting cast.

I wish we could rewind. I'd take away all our big offensive contracts apart from rbs and spend every dollar on top shelf defensive talent.

It's actually hilarious. Watching them defend him like he's a Brady/Rodgers/etc level QB and that it's just the pieces around him that are the issue cracks me up.
