Abolishing handshakes: for or against?
What do you think about handshakes?
Personally, I see little advantage to them. In a best case scenario I get a warm dry hand with a reasonable grip. But over the course of my career I've gripped sweaty hands, clammy hands, had my fingers crushed, and probably caught colds. While shaking a woman's hand is fine, I also have a general policy of not touching men and handshakes force me to do so. I have good company in this opinion. If you didn't know, George Washington refused to shake hands, and would often ensure that his hands were full in situations where hand shaking might be expected. He preferred a bow instead, as do our friends in Japan. Japan is a nice country that hasn't tried to kill us in over 70 years, and some good ideas come out of those islands. What would you think about a handshake ban, and we replace it with a polite minor bow? |
