The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

You could very well be correct. I'm just sayin' that it hasn't always been the case that a Harbaugh QB leaves him and falls flat.

Alex is better than you think tho...that game manager thing has been driving me nuts for years.

So it's not a huge drop from a late 2nd round pick to an early 4th round pick?
Exactly. Our actual 3rd is like FORTY PICKS before that potential comp pick.

Sure, some won't. But you and I both know the consensus opinion on this board, if say Geno <= Alex Smith, will be "Oh these idiots why did we draft a QB, there wasn't one, blah blah blah."

Since when is a sub 1:1 TD/INT ratio considered "playing well"?

If the 49ers are ****ing smart.....then they'll trade Alex Smith and their 2nd or 3rd round pick to the Jets for Revis. Win-win for both teams.

What I am saying is....If i want a Superbowl, then i need a QB that has talent + Reid.

Not a QB with NO talent + Reid. Sure, Alex Smith can probably game manage his way in Reid's system to 10 wins.....but their might be a rookie QB out there who can develop into something more that that.

Kinda like that Kaepernick kid, eh? (im not saying Geno is Kaepernick or anything)

You're wrong.

None of the Geno fans here are going to be pissed, in hindsight, if he busts.

NONE.

Thats a real concern....but at this point there is very little Alex hasn't seen. He's played under Mike McCarthy, Norv Turner and Mike Martz. He's seen in all.

Its not like he hasn't seen any of the WCO concepts he'll see under Reid (if rumors are true).

I'll put this another way....

...how many people thought the 49ers had enough talent LAST (2011) year to make a run at the SB? WHen Alex was resigned there was no end to the groaning by the bay. Nobody was talking about how "stacked" they were.

It took an actual coach to show how much talent was actually there.

I suspect the same might be true in KC. I know they certainly have some talent on O and have a pretty good line that could only get better by taking a LT.

What really has made the Niners so good are their lines. They took 3 O-Linemen in the first round.

If KC takes a LT to go with what they have...I really think that's how you build a winner.

But I have this funny feeling that this is what went down...

The only team to offer the 49ers anything was the Cardinals. The Chiefs were probably luke warm on the idea of trading for Alex Smith until the QBs worked out at the combine. The 49ers saw how Geno Smith worked out....and they leaked a story that the deal was done to drum up more interest so that the Cardinals would increase their offer or another team would jump into the mix.
