INDEPENDENCE SAYS EAT ME!

Good places for chow in Independence, my home town!

A couple things about this link:

1) the addresses on Hi-Boy and Mugs Up are reversed. Mugs Up is on 23rd St. There's actually three Hi-Boys in Independence; one on Blue Ridge just north of Arrowhead and close to Dixon's Chili, one at US 24 and River in North Independence near the Truman Library, and one at MO 291 and Gudgell, in East Independence north of the Independence Center.

2) Novella's is Half Can's place in the Independence Library across from Truman Library.

3) I like Tim's Pizza in south Independence better than Square Pizza on the Square. Best pizza in Independence is Fun House on US 40 Highway.

4) Courthouse Exchange has a spiced shrimp special on Friday nights that's great.

5) You can order "Chicken ala Hitler" at Das Rheinland. You can order it, but they don' think it's funny. I've tried. They have Warsteiner on draft, yum.

Come eat!

I love Tim's pizza, haven't ate there in years but back in Jr. High and High School we would all go eat there after the school dances. I grew up on Hi-Boy as well and played baseball for a couple of the ol Hi-Boy Jerry Mackey teams.

The greatest thing about them is their memories. After I moved away, the only time I'd have Tim's was at my in laws, and just eat what they'd order. So for close to a decade, I rarely ordered from there.
Then I was house sitting for my in laws, and called one night to order a pizza, and based off the pizza I ordered, they knew who I was by name.

Yeah, you need to go.
Back in HS, your wife, Debbie, and I always had to stop there to pick up food to take to one of their boyfriends after school.

I went to Van Horn with Jerry's son Greg.

Did you know Jerry Mackey was one of the guys who financed and help dig up the Arabia Steamboat? The main guy was Bob Hawley, who owns a heating and cooling business in Independence. Bob is a super nice guy, and he's one of my customers. I make the DVDs that are sold in the Arabia Museum Gift Shop.

I heard that Jerry was involved in that, I went to Truman and grew up in the same neighborhood that Jerry lived in (Ramsgate). All of my brothers and sisters went to Van Horn though. They are all in their mid 50's now, how old are you?

Ok...so we found ourselves on the square in Independence this past Saturday looking for a place to eat.

There was a soda fountain place, and a couple of other places that we weren't really interested in...then i remembered that there was an italian place somewhere there on the square. It had been about 10 years since we had eaten there. so i looked it up, and we walked half a block to the Cafe Verona.

Excellent food, good service and a really cool atmosphere....i would highly recommend it to anyone in Independence looking for a good sit down dinner.

Caddyshack down near the river market, just east of the Heart of America Bridge? My favorite bar/pizza of all time. It's a proper bar. Ice cold beer served in ice cold pitchers with icy mugs. The pizza is fantastic, the music old school (classic rock), and the TV's are good and always have sports on. I've pissed away many a friday when I'm off work at that place.

I know this isn't Independence but what about Betty's in Blue Springs on 40hwy? Anyone ever eat breakfast there?

A full order of biscuits and gravy would be enough to choke a horse.

Tims is delicious. But I can't tell the difference between their supreme pizza and funhouse supreme pizza. They're very, very close pizzas.
