Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2017 class includes Tupac, Pearl Jam, ELO CNN , Clint Davis 7:18 AM, Dec 20, 2016 6 hours ago (CNN) -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2017 has been announced. This year's inductees are Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam, Tupac Shakur and Yes. The group was selected out of 19 nominees. All of the inductees were first time nominees with the exception of Yes. To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released their first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year marked Pearl Jam and Shakur's first shot at eligibility. The inductees were selected by more than 900 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. The organization also aggregated fan votes. Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam and Yes won the fan ballot, along with The Cars. Nile Rodgers will also be honored with an award for musical excellence. The 32nd Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will take place April 7, 2017 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The ceremony will be aired on HBO. Tickets for the event will go on sale in January. |

Geddy let it all go-but if you have seen Alex's induction speech-he obviously still kept a grudge. Best speech ever. It was a personal grudge against Rush-they have just as many Rock as Prog Rock songs. I agree-Yes should have been in long ago based on their musicianship alone. |

Which is why my statement is/was that I understand why they get in, but they wouldn't have received one of my 5 votes.

Oh. So I guess I'm the dumb one and not the Hall of Fame, then.

That's my biggest gripe with music criticism in general. People can't separate what they like from what is good (or bad). I can easily acknowledge an artist's skill or impact without buying into their music. The Rolling Stones are the classic example for me -- they don't do anything for me. But that doesn't mean I can't agree that the Stones are one of the greatest bands in history (I just happen to believe The Who is better). I can hear and see what they do well, and of course they were soooo influential and have been around forever. But I just don't listen to their music because it doesn't move me. Indeed, even though I prefer Yes and Genesis, I think The Who is better than they are -- I think The Who is the best rock band in history. I can separate my personal preferences (prog) from what I know or believe to be true -- that The Who was superior (mainly because they weren't dragged down by pompous bombast). In no way have I ever told someone they were wrong not to like Yes. I absolutely can understand why people wouldn't like them. But I think Yes has objectively proven they are an important band in the history of rock, with their sales, longevity and influence, as well as their musical chops (just from a purely technical standpoint, if not an aesthetic one -- 10-minute guitar solos aren't everyone's cup of tea). Sorry, tl/dr |

So which is it? I sense some kind of twisted conspiracy here.
