*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

I would say the Royals have no interest in moving him this year because they need Moustakas insurance. But if they get Moustakas re-signed or extended, surely he'd be made available.

The Cards still have precisely jack shit long-term at 3b but a wealth of pitching prospects. We have Luke Weaver at roughly the same age and service time as Cuthbert who projects as a nice long-term 3 or 4 in the rotation.

He got whacked around a bit during his call-up last year but it was really an issues of occasionally just being too hittable; a command vs. control thing. Strikeout and walk numbers were actually pretty good (walks a little high but nothing too far out of range and also completely out of character). He just had a tendency to give into hitters and groove one if he got behind; not shocking for a young pitcher really. And frankly, giving up 11 ER in your last 2.2 innings is going to make anyone's line look worse than he actually performed, especially over a small sample size.

Weaver for Cuthbert looks like a nice 'baseball trade' if Moustakas were extended. The Cards get their long-term 3b option and the Royals would get a middle of the rotation starter with some upside. The Royals would gain a year of age and a year of team control (perhaps even 2 if the Cards keep Weaver down more this year as I expect), but that's not a deal-breaker.

I still think there's a trade to be made between these two squads.

One thing scares me about Weaver...his genes.

Developing pitching is critical for small markets. It's pretty remarkable we did what we did without doing it. I suppose YV was, Duffy sorta (didn't do a ton during our runs). We did pawn off Odorizzi, Finnegan and Reed. Manaea

I'm not sure I understand. He's not related to the two crazy Weaver brothers, if that's what the thought was.

While I do agree that Danny wasn't an enormous presence in either of our postseasons, Duffy was instrumental during the regular season in 2014. In fact, he was our most dominant starter during a critical stretch of the season.

You're and idiot. He doesn't mean pants, he means little magic dudes that live in lamps. Weaver allegedly has a few of them.

I think I mentioned this in the Cardinals thread when he made his debut last year: My wife works with Luke Weaver's mother.

But TINSTAAPP is largely the belief that there's so many steps/hurdles to clear along the way that until a guy gets to the big leagues without his arm having torn clear from his body, you can't count on him.

Weaver made it to the big leagues seemingly intact and showing the same ability to get swings and misses. That's that big final step to establishing yourself less as a prospect and more as a young major leaguer.

I don't think Weaver is quite there, yet. He's close, but needs to have some MLB success to shed the prospect label.

In terms of safeness or floor, he's towards the top of the heap there. Having a successful AAA stint is important. He's also thrown a lot of minor league innings without injury concerns, so that is a mark in his favor.

I'd be thrilled to add Weaver to KC's crop of arms, both for 2017 and moving forward. He would be a great ft in KC and matches the profile of guys Moore has brought in when moving pieces about to be FAs.

Duffy, Kennedy, Weaver, Karns would be a pretty good - and economical - way to approach 2018 and beyond in the rotation.

My fellow Cardinal fans evidently don't believe in Cuthbert's ceiling. They see a guy that's likely in the mold of a utility player long-term (and oddly, seem to prefer Dozier. I do not).

In Cuthbert I see someone who's ceiling is Anthony Rendon and who's floor is....I dunno....does a poor man's Juan Uribe seem fair? He has the bat control to make him a viable player even if his power doesn't take a step forward. He'll be BABIP reliant at that point but with his GB rates, his BABIP should stay pretty high. And if his GB rates drop, it will probably mean more fly balls which will be a good thing for him as his frame can support more power if he puts the ball in the air more.

I like him but my Cards friends think that someone like Jose Ramirez or Jonathan Villar is a more equitable return or they prefer more risk/reward prospects like Matt Chapman. If I went that route, I'm a fan of Ryan McMahon (gonna watch him this year as I think he takes a big step forward).

Which Dozier (Twins or the Royals)? If you want to swap our Dozier for Luke Weaver. I'm game. Heck I think I would strongly consider Cuthbert for Weaver.

Your Dozier. Who I feel like is a utility man waiting to happen. An overaged hitter smacking around AA on his third trip through isn't all that impressive, though admittedly he carried some good momentum through to AAA. I just don't see the tools that Cuthbert has.

Been wrong before, though...
