To me, that is a different argument than picking plays with the clock in mind. Even if you don't think it's your best opportunity to score right away.
If I remember correctly, Reid was trying to get MORE time put on the clock right before the 2 minute warning.

2 games straight where Reid had no idea about trying to manage the clock.

Just run the ball a couple of times and get another 1st down so that Manning doesn't have a full 2 minutes to go the length of the field.

Same thing with Rivers in the Charger game

coaches all over the league do it all the time, it's not too much to ask imo.

Here is the problem though - had we scored with 1:45 left. Kicked off for a touchback. Manning only has to go 50 yards in that time for a 47 yard FG attempt.

Considering how our defense was playing, I see them covering that & more fairly easily.

That's all great in theory.....if you're tied. Reid was doing the exact same thing that he did in San Diego....he was going for the TD that we needed. You would have been ****ing furious if he ran a bunch of time off the clock...and in the process....not scored a TD to tie the game. He has to worry about tying the game first before running time off the clock.

nothing is guaranteed and it might not work out but i would just hope that our Head Coach would be aware of the situation.

The Charger game was just terrible. Wait until there is 1 second left on the play clock instead of 14 to call the timeout and run the ball a single time and Rivers doesn't have enough time to score. We did nothing.

I would of understood what he was trying to do. I also said in the game thread that we might want to go for a 2-pt conversion if we scored.

Manning was shredding us

If our defense was even holding our own it wouldn't be a big deal but our D was dying out there.

I like Reid and the Clock management didn't lose the game, but it sure didn't help us either.

The only way I would have been furious about that situation was if they didn't score a TD simply because time ran out. Like they were ****ing around and burned through 2 minutes, & 2 time outs without even getting chances at that TD.

Time was a factor early in that drive - only because we had the entire field to go. Once we got the ball at the 20, time wasn't a factor no matter how slowly we moved.

I understand. At that time, I wouldn't pick a play looking to burn time either. I'd pick a play most likely to gain at least 4 yards. I can't believe they thought throwing to the end zone there was the best way to get the 4 yards.

After that, with 4 downs to work with, maybe then a little consideration can be given to the clock by running plays that, if not successful, at least result in running some time off. But yeah, when you need a TD, you can't make playing the clock the #1 priority.

The ****-up with the SD game was the time-out he called with 1:20 or whatever left--and he could have run off 15-20 more seconds before calling the time out.

THAT would have been an epic argument had we done that and failed, losing by one. EPIC.

I'm not saying he was right, but it seemed to me that he was trying to get enough play clock on there that Manning could have a stopped drive and they'd still have a shot at scoring a FG for a win.

You can argue all day if that was stupid or not, but it is the only reasonable justification for the way he was managing the clock at the end.

Or an EPIC win if we had made it.

Which do you think provided us the better chance to win?

Making it into the endzone from 2 yards away in a single play

or

stopping the Denver offense from getting into field goal range with 2 minutes left on the clock.

We needed a FIRST DOWN there. Calling the best possible play and running some time off the clock were not mutually exclusive in that situation. And, the play that ended up being called was hardly the best possible play to get a first down. Alex ended up throwing the ball across his body from right to left and the pass was telegraphed to the Denver defenders, with the resultant timing being all in their favor.

I would have faked a handoff to Charles up the middle off a reverse pivot, then boot legged Alex to the wide side for a run/pass option.
