How would YOU try to improve the defense?

Amid all the hysteria over our two wins and offensive performances, I'm just wondering what can realistically be done to improve the defense? Now we know Berry will hopefully be returning soon which should be massive, but with the way this offense is looking, just a slight improvement on defense could take us to the promise land yall. So does Veach sit, be patient and hope Berry is enough to improve things? Should he get on the phone and beg Breeland to join the kingdom? Or should he seek to make a trade of some sort?

I think I'd probably go with trying to get Breeland in and with Berry added to the mix I think the unit would be vastly improved.

...Breeland...Berry...Parker...Fuller...

With Nelson In the slot. Surely that would be enough?

Ford and Houston are both guys that have put up double digit sacks in the past. They're both supposedly healthy. Neither are so old that they should be washed up yet.

Dunno. There SHOULD be some outside pass rush.

It doesn't matter, we're just going in circles. We all want it to get better, we just disagree on the percentage of the blame.

Take the opposing offense out to party late night before the game. Only hookers and blow can save us now.

Both of those guys have put up double digit sacks in BOB SUTTON'S DEFENSE. Seems we're at an impasse.

The last time Houston was in double digits was when he wasn't in pass coverage a lot. Drop O'Daniel in there, put both Kpass and Speaks in on occasion. In not sold on Ragland as much this year. Seems like he whiffs a lot.

What member of the coaching staff has blamed talent? What fans say means absolutely squat.

Replace Scandrick and occasionally send more than 2 or 3 out of the front 7 after the QB.

Also, though, it's more suffering death by a thousand cuts at this point than it has been in the past. There just aren't that many big back-breaking plays. We've basically got to figure out the shallow crosses and the tight end up the seam. And clean up the tackling a little, although I think that stuff late is more fatigue than anything.

I see people trying to compare this to the Vermeil teams, and it's just not the same, on either side of the ball. Those teams were more akin to running offenses that ate up time of possession with defenses that rarely forced a punt and could give up 80 yards on a single play at any point. This team is all passing (so far), scores very fast, doesn't eat much clock at all (none of which is a negative, just stating facts...) and although the defense gets some stops, they're also facing a ton of possessions by default. Keep in mind the Steelers punted 5 times today, and went 3 of 11 on third down. So they did get off the field some. It's not the career day defense against the Colts in January '04.

One positive is that I think the attitude is already starting to change with Hitchens, so I'm not all that worried about them continuing to play soft as they traditionally have.

We just broke a losing streak older than many people here tonight

But lets rag about the defense on the road vs a powerhouse getting every damn call imaginable in their home opener

Its sad

I thought the outside corners played well. It's the inside of the field that's killing us.

We need safety help and a hybrid LB who can cover.

I can't speak for others but my frustration is coming in how far I think this team can go if we just get competent pass coverage. The thrill of this victory is not lost on me.

I'm no fan of Sutton but the primary issue is personnel. We have 3 legitimate starters on Defense: Chris Jones, Hitchens and Fuller. Everyone else are just guys.

Houston hasn't done shit since he got paid.
Ford is a fragile brokedick.
Allan Bailey should be in jail for robbing the Chiefs for his current contract.
Xavier Williams is a free agent JAG.
Ragland is a 2-down thumper and is a liability against the pass.
Steve Nelson teases but never delivers.
Scandrick is recycled garbage.
Ron Parker is twice recycled garbage.

You can make lemonade from lemons but you can't make a quality defense from a bunch of brokedick, recycled garbage.

Our latest high round defensive draft picks (KPass and Speaks) are playing out of position. They were big defensive linemen in college asked to played OLB in pros. That's weird shit right there. Never mind neither player were all that good in college.

Yes, Bob Sutton sucks. The problem is bigger than Bob Sutton.
