Kershaw lands 7 years and $215 million

The*Los Angeles Dodgers*and*Clayton Kershaw*have agreed on a seven-year, $215 million deal, sources with knowledge of the situation said.

Kershaw has an out clause after five years.

It is the richest deal for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history, eclipsing the seven-year, $180 million contract Detroit gave*Justin Verlander*last winter, and his average annual salary of $30.7 million is the highest ever for any baseball player.

The 25-year-old Kershaw has won two of the last three National League Cy Young Awards, as well as a Roberto Clemente award for his charitable work.

Kershaw and his wife, Ellen, founded an orphanage in the African nation of Zambia called Hope's Home that they visit every offseason. They co-wrote a book about their experiences last winter titled, "Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself."

Kershaw went 16-9 with a 1.83 ERA and 232 strikeouts last season, his sixth with the Dodgers. The left-hander has a 2.60 career ERA and recorded at least 212 strikeouts in each of the past four seasons.

Dbacks will be competitive though. Dodgers took the division and had the most injuries i ever seen. I guess thats what the big bank roll does. Crazy to think they were bankrupt a few years ago. Thank god for Stan Kasten and his 5billion net worth. He may be worth 7B not too sure
I doubt Stan Kasten is worth $5-7b. He was the GM for the Braves and then Nationals. The Dodgers gave him a small ownership percentage to run baseball ops in LA. Mark Walter is the General Partner (main owner) of the Dodgers. Hedge fund guy who might be worth that amount.

The timing on this is interesting as the deadline for Tanaka is approaching. Tanaka is attractive, not only because of his age, but much of his compensation will be paid to the Japanese baseball team that owns his rights and will not count against the salary cap luxury tax.

The Dodgers and Yankees are said to be the leaders in the Tanaka race. Imagine that rotation, Kershaw, Greinke, Ryu, Tanaka, Haren/Beckett/Billingsly!

He's worth it. He's won 2 of the last 3 Cy Youngs and he's only 25.

People whine about baseball contracts but they are just a function of the TV contracts. You are paid according to what you can bring in.

Lincecum's problem is his weight. He is 160-170 and has a violent delivery. His body can't keep up. As far as illegal substances are concerned, his issue was with weed and since he's from Washington where it was just legalized he should be ok.

Fruit ninja. I dont know. They said panda has lost 42 lbs. Posey will not have another down year. Adding Hudson is huge. I agree with lincecum. In still posed they re-signed him. Would much rather have re-signed chad gaudin and used that money to sign Nelson Cruz.

Last time Panda dropped alot of weight, he had a bad year. Then they told himt o gain some pounds back. So who knows on that dude.

I would still go with Dodgers and Dbacks right now. Dbacks have a good squad. Dodgers as well, and now they willhave a 2nd basemen as they signed that dude outof Cuba thats supposed to be pretty freaking good. 2nd and 3rd were a major issue for the Dodgers last year as it was their 2 worst positions by far

Revisit this 6 months later! lol Giants started out strong but have fallen off the cliff the last month.

Kershaw for having a salary like that is now at 36 scoreless innings. 10-2 1.85 ERA, by his next start he will quality for ERA. He No hit the Rockies, then 2 starts later 2 hits the rockies. lol What he's doing right now is insane.

Little tidbit i seen on mlb.com.....

Quote:
""Clayton has been able to make the adjustment. That's why he's pretty good."

How good?

Well, his career 2.55 ERA is the lowest since 1920 for any pitcher with at least 1,000 innings pitched and 100 games started.

He is right in front of Whitey Ford (2.75), Sandy Koufax (2.76), Spud Chandler (2.84) and Jim Palmer (2.86)."
