Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

You're telling the Dolphins that you want a 1st round pick for Albert.

Albert's going to be pretty (very) expensive. He does apparently have durability concerns. And he's six-to-eight years older than the guy you maybe want in the 1st.

If you want to get Albert out the door, a 2nd rounder is a fair discount that can help the team longterm, ostensibly.
Thanks for the explanation. I never considered different CBA's. Durrr.

Anad as an aside, this very post is a good reason not to take Joeckel/Fisher at 1.1, if you're looking at it from a value perspective...

If a franchised player negotiates a deal with another team in free agency, the signing team is required to give up 2 first rounders.

If, however, the team that franchises the player chooses to, they can trade that player for any compensation they agree upon.

In this case, Albert is under contract at the franchise tender, and the Chiefs can negotiate whatever they consider a fair price in trade.

Just in case you were wondering.
That's also for a WR who is in his prime for a team that needed WR help.

This trade isn't similar at all IMO.

The different CBA is not relevant, at all.

That was my belief initially, hence my "taking it in the ass" statement.

When you look at this situation, and compare it to the Allen trade, and the Marshall trade, you really get an understanding of just how much the value of the LT position has decreased in just the last 10 years.

It's all relative to circumstances. Using any ironclad standards are likely to get you fired like Pioli, who lived and died by them.

What is the value your current circumstances dictate?

For me, the answer is to keep the tackle so you don't have to burn the 1st on it, then use that 1st on a QB who by most accounts fits your system really well, and could benefit from having his locker next to Smith and Daniel. Or add more firepower to your front seven in Lotulelei, Floyd, or Jordan.

For Reid/Dorsey, they clearly don't believe Geno or Albert is a great fit. In which case, the value is to land the best QB available this offseason (Alex Smith) for a 2nd, try to get that second back for Albert and take one of the great tackle prospects at 1.

The compensation has been agreed to which is why they allowed contract talks with the Dolphins. PFC is a ****ing joke. They are getting more than a 3.

I don't know why not.

As it stands now, almost every team is at their cap limit or near it.

Under the last CBA, teams could intentionally hang out $30 million under it. So if a team like the Vikes really wanted Jared Allen, they could make a super aggressive move to land him and not have to lose any players.

If the Vikings wanted him today, with a full roster of players they like and a full cap, they'd have to cut a handful of players to make room for him. That alone would almost certainly make them offer Allen less.

Any idea if it's a 2a or a 2b?

Any idea if anything else will be thrown into the pot?

It's not relevant to the compensation to the team in trade.

yea, nothing alike at all

value left tackle > (non-megatron type) wide receiver

If the Chiefs are getting low-balled then they should just keep Albert on the franchise tag for a year and play the rookie at RT.
