Per Verderame: Veach would prefer to keep Chris Jones

Interesting article here. Not a huge fan of Verderame but he was at the Super Bowl and he does go to the combine. I think he gets some tips, albeit from Terez (who is a nice guy).

Here is the most interesting part of the article. 2021 and 2022 would be extremely difficult to manage.

Quote:

What the Chiefs can do with their money

Looking at Kansas City’s cap situation, it can release wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Damien Wilson, clearing out $18.5 million in space. Combined with rollover money and already existing room, that’s enough cash for Veach to tag Jones, re-sign a few other pending free agents and extend Patrick Mahomes.

Speaking of Mahomes, the 24-year-old quarterback is likely to soon be the highest-paid player in the league. This is another important factor to consider.

Let’s play GM for a moment and do the following to the Chiefs’ roster:

•Cut Sammy Watkins
•Cut Damien Wilson
•Cut Cam Erving

Extend Patrick Mahomes on a five-year, $200 million deal
Use franchise tag on Chris Jones
Allow $10 million for free agents and draft picks
Keep $2 million in emergency space
Using the Jared Goff and Carson Wentz extension structures as a template, Mahomes’ cap hit would approximately be $11 million this season. Factor in Jones’ tag and the $12 million outlined above, and Kansas City is laying out $35 million.

The Chiefs could do it. But while it’s palatable for 2020, what about 2021 and beyond?

If Kansas City gave Mahomes the aforementioned extension, his cap number would be enormous in 2021, potentially the full $40 million figure. If the Chiefs also signed Jones to Clark’s exact deal, the cap number would be $22.7 million in 2021.

If we account for a slight rise in the NFL salary cap both this year and next, it’ll be around $210 million. Under these parameters, Kansas City would be looking at the following cap hits in 2021:

Patrick Mahomes ($40M)
Frank Clark ($24.2M)
Chris Jones ($22.7)
Tyrann Mathieu ($19.7M)
Tyreek Hill ($15.7M)
In total, the top five players on the Chiefs would be earning $122.3 million, or 58 percent of the salary cap.

Going into this offseason with a projected $200 million salary cap, only one team is currently allocating more than 50 percent to their top five players: the Los Angeles Rams at 54 percent.

Kansas City can always create cap space with extensions and releases, but tying up such a large chunk of money in five players is dangerous. The Chiefs would be largely unable to sign any other meaningful free agents for a few years — including their own — while being completely reliant on the draft to restock departing talent.

In his three years at the helm, Veach has proven to believe in acquiring top-shelf talent and filling in around them with low-cost, high-upside veteran deals (see: Damien Williams, Stefen Wisniewski, Mike Pennel) and rookie deals.

Jones certainly fits Veach’s profile. The question is if he fits into Kansas City’s payroll.

No. I think I’d prefer volume for him. I’d rather have two late firsts and an extra pick this year/next rather than just moving up that much.

If I thought it was high enough to get Kinlaw, it would be possibly workable.

Nope, Jones is worth a first and third alone without swapping picks. He’s a known commodity and young, he’ll fetch us a better price than that.

I’m good with that. And if I’m the Dolphins....I’d do that. They already have two other first round picks and a good shot that Tua falls to 5.

Cap stuff is complicated, but when you pay a signing bonus you actually give the player the cash on day 1 but you average it over the life of the contract for cap purposes. If you trade a player, you don't get that bonus cash back so you take the full hit of 4 years of signing bonus this year, and actually lose cap.

I don't think some of you realize just how important Chris. Jones is to this D. He is probably the most important player on that side of the ball. The pressure that he generates from the DT position allows him to collapse the pocket and doesn't allow the QB to step up. Since the QB can't step up into the pocket our outside pass rushers can get to him easier. This also forces the QB to make bad throws or throw incompletions, so the guys in coverage don't have to play perfectly or have to cover a guy for a long amount of time.

Chris Jones is double teamed and beats that double team more than most every other player in the league. That frees up other guys as the offense has to specifically game plan for CJ. He has looked just as dominant as Aaron Donald and deserves to be paid arpund that amount. This D will take a huge hit without #95.

I am optimistic that Jones and KC are able to work out a long term deal. He has continued to get better every year and he's still extremely young, so he will continue to get better. That's one of the main reasons why I think Veach will pay the man. Veach isnt a dummy when it comes to giving out long term deals. He doesn't give put contracts in which KC will be paying a guy much past 30 years old. We could sign Jones to a 5 year deal and that contract would be up when he is 30. KC would be reeruned to miss out on the Jones' prime years.

I, along with all of Chiefs Kingdom, have watched for years as we drafted defensive lineman after defensive lineman, and we FINALLY hit on a legit superstar, so it would absolutely suck to lose him as a cap casualty.

If Jones was just a run stuffer like Poe, losing him wouldn't hurt as much. But, interior defensive linemen who can rack up sacks are rare in the NFL. We need to keep him, because our chances of finding his replacement in the draft, or even someone 50% as good, is very low.

Rather have a solid defense across the board than shelling out $20M for one guy. Clark is overpaid as well in this regard. Jones was part of the defense in 2018 and it was terrible. They improved in 2019 because of Spags' scheme/playcalling and new guys such as Suggs, Pennel, Badger, Thornhill, Breeland, Clark (overpaid as he might be), Wilson, etc.

Clark - $20.8M (overpaid)
Badger - $14M (this one seems OK)
Jones - $20M

It is hard to tie up this much money in only 3 players on the defense. You need quality depth on that side of the ball or it goes to hell in a hurry. They've got a pretty big mess on their hands to figure out all of this in the offseason.

How come no one is suggesting we extend Hill? We gave him a very hedge-y three year deal and he’s underpaid. The injuries kept his stats down, but he’s still below market. Let’s secure him for another 2 years, effectively 5 total and give him a little more deserved cash that lessens the load on the cap.

I think we all agree that we'd love to keep Chris Jones.

I think most of us are unsure that's going to be feasible.

Tag and trade Jones. It's the only thing that makes sense. Wilson isn't going anywhere. Veach will need to trade back -- not up-- in the draft going forward. Hunt should invest whatever Reid/Veach want/need in scouts. They can't afford to miss on anyone given Mahomes contract.

Detroit seems like a viable trading partner. They're close to contending, have cap space, draft capital, and are severely lacking a pass rush. Here are some trade scenarios that fall in-line with what we gave up to get Frank Clark.
